Got a new toy: HP Pavilion zv6000 series laptop (http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_series.do?series_name=zv6000_series&catLevel=2&category=notebooks/hp_pavilion&storeName=computer_store)... A64 3200+, 1GB RAM, 128MB ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics, 80G drive, etc, and got a great deal on it.

now, question: hardware sensors: motherboard monitor doesnt seem to like whatever hardware sensors are on the thing. in linux, stuff in /proc/acpi can tell me temperature, so there has to be an easy way to monitor the temperature via ACPI. also the system properties page reports different CPU speeds than MBM and CPU-Z. which is right, and what windows apps are good for monitoring the temperature and CPU speed?

Not sure if it would handle your new system, but on an older sytem running win I use motherboard monitor: http://mbm.livewiredev.com/

You can use AMD Dashboard (http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/dashboard.exe)
Other AMD tools here http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html

and you can find out what others are talking about here http://notebookanalysis.com/modules.php?name=Forums

I seem to remember someone on Ars DC posted a special prog for laptops, might try the search, and there was a plugin or something on the MBM forums or associated sites that lets MBM work I think.
I did have it running on a Centrino lappie and an IBM but I can`t remember what it was now.
