I have a very confusing problem just developed on my Athlon2000XP system.

It turns on, then the problems start.

first,
Both CD-ROMS spin up then their led's just flash opposite of each other.
second
computer starts to beep every sec.
third
power led is like a strobe light.

Otherwise it doesnt do anything else.

I am possible thinking of a bad powersupply, maybe even blown MB.
Anyone ever come across anything like this?

Computer beeping every sec, I thinking maybe MEM or Processor. But when the power led just flashes like a strobe light, I turn to powersupply.

I CONFUSED........................

Any suggestion before I attack it Thur night...............

I have a spare PS unit I wil test with first. Then work my way onto the MB. Starting with Ram, then Processor, then finally MB.

If you have seen anything like this, let me know. This is the very first time I have ever seen a system do this.

I'd check the RAM first because it is the easiest thing to swap out. In my experience constant beeping has been always been a RAM problem. Good luck in fixing it.

If you listen carefully, you can also hear a pulsing sound.
It's probably a Bad power supply.
Just saw this happen for the first time in 20 years last week in two Dell GX-270s.
I had them come out and replace the motherboard, didn't fix the problem.
They returned the next day with CPUs and power supplies.
Replaced power supply, all better.
Dell GX-260 and GX-270s have swollen capacitor problems and will replace the motherboard.
Dell GX-280s have a known bad power supply problem.
Let us know how it all turns out.

Most pcs have a beep code to indicate what the problem is and if you look it up in the manual it should give you a good indication of the problem.
Failing that, email the manufacturer with the beep code and they`ll tell you.

Am now totally confused..........

Checked out PS unit, passed.
Still I replaced with new unit. still no working.

Pull Processor, place into another board, works.

Pulled MEM placed into another unit, works.

Put different components into non working unit, guess what. Its working.

Put all the old parts back into it, it works.............

One of them unknown self fixing problems I guess.....

Mebbe something like mem wasn`t quite plugged in properly...had that problem before as well as a bent pin on a cpu and clag in the memory slot off the HS compound and many more.
Mainly find if something not plugged in properly, psu may shut down and won`t reset till you unplug it and some bios`s do the same.
