It looks like someone else is able to get coverage on /. ;)

The verification should be complete just in time for Christmas.

Unfortunately it's not 10M digits but it is, most probably, the 43rd Mersenne Prime.

Mind boggling to think that we've only found 43 of them and it is conjectured, and widely believed, that there are an infinite number of Mersenne Primes.

Haven't we tested just a few millions

Here's an idiotic question(when they're creative, they're my favorite kind :rotfl: ): If the prime were printed in a newspaper as a normal font, how much space(large newspaper pages) would it take up? What about a normal magazine? Or a paperback?(Then calculate the answer with commas).

Fun question, I might try to solve it myself at some point.

When I verified M41, a journalist figured out that it would take up the contents of two bibles. This one will be even longer.

YEA, and God said unto the crunchers, the Intels shall PRP, the Athlons shall sieve, and the AMD64s shall partake of whatever most soothes the soul. And the crunchers formed a mass body of electronic slaves. And God saw that it was VERY good. And He allowed the Silicon Age to continue, which was VERY good.

George Woltman has announced that it is indeed a prime.
