Since the board has quieted down a lot now...

Let's say there was a weekly television news program devoted to distributed computing on one of the cable networks (Tech TV being probably the most likely choice). What would you like it to cover of DF? What would you suggest its format be?

The following is a possible format:

OPENING NEWS SECTION. Announcing new dc projects, the appearance of dc project articles in scientific journals, ending of dc projects, troubles of dc projects, dc projects in development, dc projects gaining/losing corporate sponors, etc. This section would end with a sort of horserace report of the growth/decline of volunteers in dc projects and comparison of productivity increase/decrease since last week within each project ... reported possibly like how the stock market is reported.

DC PROJECT PROFILE. Currently there's over 70 dc projects running and a lot more in the pipeline about to come out. That's more than enough for profiling one a week for over a year. Once all are profiled, simply do them again with profile updates. The profiles would present the backgrounds on the scientists behind the projects, explaining in layman terms what they're trying to accomplish, how their project is different from others, tour of their lab, getting the scientists to regale us with tales of their trials and triumphs, etc.

DC VOLUNTEER PROFILE. The profiling of the big crunchers. This would be part of their fifteen minutes of fame. The profile would show where they live, what they do for a living, tour of their computer farm, why they crunch, what their family and friends think of their crunching, etc. Naturally, if a celebrity is a cruncher, they'd be profiled. Needless to say, no cruncher would be profiled without their permission.

COMPUTER FARM WORKSHOP. Get two computer geeks to talk about different aspects of starting, maintaining, upgrading, and expanding one's own personal computer farm. They use questions sent in by viewers and thus use a Q&A format

Well, that's the idea. Been toying with it for a bit and ever so often thought of writing up a show proposal and submitting it to an appropriate cable TV network. My biggest concern is having enough material to fill a weekly half-hour show. Any suggestions? What would you like such a program to cover about DF? If you could schedule it, when would be a good time for such a show to air during the week?

sounds like it would be interesting... I would watch... :)

but, it would be a very narrow demographic... :(

The cable TV networks I would approach would already be specialty networks. And if the show could draw in a good portion of all the dc volunteers (SETI@Home, Folding@Home, DF, etc.), it could very likely become the highest rated show on such a network. ;)
