...university teacher decides, at the end of the semester and without telling the students, to change the rules of evaluation of a certain discipline? Probably in the US he gets shot....

I need the opinion of all teachers around here. Thanks.

not if he has tenure, he doesnt. in that case basically you bend over and take it. if you're lucky, the problem may be corrected in future generations.

of course it depends a lot on the university. in smaller teaching-oriented universities, the profs tend to have more accountability to the students, particularly for undergrad. but in a large research institution, if a professor brings in a lot of research money he/she can basically get away with murder.

disclaimer: i'm not a professor (yet), but thats what i've seen/heard/experienced

I do happen to be on the Prof side of things. First thing is double check that the change wasn't discussed earlier in the semester. Talk to the prof, if you are not satisfied, talk to the chair of his/her department. Go to the Dean if you are still not satified. there is probably a policy in your academic catlog about such things.

in many respect the Syllabus is a contract between you and the prof.

Here's the point:

I got classification to pass through that discipline but he changed the rule for the second exam. He says that now all students should have a minimal classification on that exam. No, this wasn't discussed earlier in the semester. What is doing is illegal and he knows because I went to talk to him.
The final classification is a sum of all exam and oral exams through the semester and I got a positive classification but I didn't have a classification higher than the minimal in the second exam. Tomorrow I will have to make another exam to compensate the second one, 50% of all students have too, so I can't do nothing until I get my degree. Here is my problem, I only have this one left to finish my degree. Well, tecnically I finished my degree but he changed the rules :swear:. My future is in risk because of a stupid teacher.
I hope you are understanding my position. I'm so scare and shaking all over the place. I can't sleep at night....

oh I understand, but make sure that after you finish your degree that you do not let this just die. I have seen students nearly call lawyers over things, and then after they have their degree they just let it die because it does not affect them anymore. that is the real reason why some profs appear to have no consequences, without hard proof and testemoney (sp?) the administration is not in a position to do anything.

I would like to share this moment with all my Free-DC friends. I just received my last classification on my last exam and I can tell you guys that I finished my Mechanical Engineering degree. Strange but I am not feeling nothing!

About the teacher I have to think about the best strategy to attack this problem. I'm taking notes on everything he made for the last semester, seeing which positions were illegal, etc. I found a few strange things about him like having a company working with the resources of the University, well, that's illegal even in the third world.

I won't do nothing until everything is published.

Next phase is to find a job.

Cheers,

Carlos Eduardo

As Bok said, same counts for me too. And I pass all that for three times (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.). The further you go that strange thing of feeling nothing is stronger. ;) I start feeling relief only after I finally exit my postdoc status and got permanent research position at my institute (happened about month ago).

Anyway, I wish you to find excellent job that will bring you lots of joy (and money).

Heheh, how many do you have now? A whole collection?

I remember after writing my last exam, I walked out into the hallway and yelled "WOOHOO!!!". Everyone turned to look at me who was still writing their exams. Oops, oh well, I was very happy to be done.

Congrats Carlos, good luck job hunting.

Thank you all. Today I visited the lab and a few persons I will work with. It's really a cold lab.

Yes, it's a research job in an institute connected to the university. This institute is developing a few water heaters for the big companies like Bosch.
My area is in combustion, heat, cold, thermodynamics, etc.....

That's cool! I also work in the institute, but entirely different field... economics. And we are not connected to the university. Is there possibility to continue your education toward PhD?

Just an update. I started to work full time this week. My schedule is from 9:00 to 12:30 then from 14:00 to 18:00 but of course I always leave work at 19:00 or even later.
I work in a lab with three people and I have access to a few machines. One is already running DPAD, hehe.

Great to hear your work update. I was wondering how is it going with your work at the institute. Good to hear you are full time there now. Are you satisfied with your job?

And it's always good to have access to some new machines.

Yes, I am. Great team we have there but I'm still in the study phase. Reading reports, etc...
I still don't have network access on my machine but I hope to fix the problem next Monday.

Edo, thanks for asking.
