I had this happen to me last year.
The PSU blew and spiked all of the memory.

PSU frying is a very common thing and it has happened in my old apt more than 3 times with 3 different machines.
Our guess was that the old electrical circuits plus the old fuse box didn't really helped the situation as we get alot of electrical spikes in our old building.
Therefore, it is best to get a good UPS that could atleast protect your investment.

Bad news it is the PSU
Good news it wasn't an expensive one.
Good news part 2 I had the one I took out of that case to put the cheapo, but supossedly more powerful one in.
Bad news I have had to pull the plug on the CDRW and 3 fans to bring the usage down for the piddley weak PSU to work.
Good news part 3 it is working.
Guess I'm gonna have to look fo another PSU so I can overclock this baby again, until then it's stock speed slowlane for now. :beep:

I`ve stopped using el cheapo psu`s for just that reason and the more expensive but poorly built (bad build quality?) Antecs after a run of faults on both and particularly Antec ones which surprised me a bit ( 3 psu`s, 3 different ranges, all 480w, and 2 rma ones also dying in one year).
I stick with Enermax now and buy in for stock when they come up in offers on various websites.
The new Cooler Giant ones are excellent quality and instead of the fan on the case drawing hot air through the psu, they have a very quiet Sanyo Denki blower which exhausts directly out the back fan. The standard rear exhaust fan still pulls air out of the case via the slots opposite.
Scan also do (and some other sites in UK) some very reasonable psu testers Fozzie, worth a few quid and good if you can catch them on their Today only offers.
I`ve tested most of the cheap psus I`ve bought and both the Antec and Enermax on an expensive psu tester which gives you all the gen and most of the 550w cheap ones are struggling at 450w and will die from spikes or overloads with little provocation whilst the Antec and Enermax both go well past their ratings. Just a bit concerned over the current build quality on the Antecs.
Enermax also now have one of the best efficiency ratings I`ve seen whereas the cheapo ones are around 72%-75% at best, I`ve tested Enermax new Coolergiant at an average of 83% and a best of 86%.
With a lot of computers running, it can make a difference to your power bill in what psu you run.
Another alternative is Seasonic
Got good ratings in the best (I think) german computer magazine (c't) and soppused to very stable, very efficient and and even quiet.
I picked up one(400W) for a test case at ebay.de for 9.99Euros + shipping.
Haven't realy tried it , but i know it is one of the older series (although it is brand new). It is more like 380W if you compare the the different power rails (correct english term?) with a quality psu. I actually compared it to my brother's Antec which is about 2-3 years old and runs absolutly smooth (quiet and cool)...
So maybe on ebay UK you can find a similar deal?

I absolutely agree with you on Seasonic. I see it everyday and use it everyday, in a very large scale.

Yep, Seasonic have always been a good reliable brand.
I think I`ve still got one or two on the old PII and PIII Xeon servers I`ve got lying around and we used them a lot at work.
Just seen one on OCUK in their clearance and B goods section selling for £47 and it`s an S12 500w one which was double that price.
ebay.co.uk looks pretty dead concerning Seasonic PSUs....:(
Maybe our bear should have a look at ebay germany...there are many for cheap money...
Saw 10 pieces, new, 400W, active PFC for 99Euros plus shipping...
Then Fozzie would have spare ones:rotfl:
