My colleague out here in Phoenix this afternoon spilled water on his laptop. It won't boot now. We are leaving it for a few hours to dry out after using a hairdryer for a short while to no effect.

Anyway, long story short.

At the very least I need to get at the hard drive. So questions..

What the easiest way to get the data off the laptop hard drive. I haven't opened up the laptop yet, but is it a standard ide or sata interface on these. Been a few years since I had to open up a laptop?

I presume I can buy an interface somewhere. So second question. Perhaps if Teejay is reading this. Anywhere in the Phoenix are where there is a speciality computer shop which might sell something like this? Preferably as close to Tempe as possible...

Long shot I know but we could really use getting to that hard drive tomorrow. I can buy a new laptop easily enough so that he can continue working..

p.s. oh yeah, I've already :haddock: him !

Frys Electronics is just South East of you, on Baseline Road.
Look it up in the phone book... wait, let me maps.google.com it for you
300 West Baseline Road , Tempe, AZ Phone: (602) 445-5100

You want the 2.5" laptop IDE to USB cable, ~$25 :)

Go get a can of air, pop the clamshell, dis-assemble as much as you can, use the can upside down and get it everywhere. Yes, it's COLD and frosty ;)
Let it set out for awhile, preferably with a fan blowing over it...
assemble and turn back on, should be just fine.
I salvage alot of laptops like that ...

Damn,

didn't know about Fry's being here. I just went over Baseline too. Was on the way to a BestBuy in Mesa to scope new laptops just in case as he wants a < 3lb one... Spotted a small PC store on the way and went in. Just bought a 2.5" ide enclosure which will work along with a toolkit. I'll leave it till morning and see if it boots. If not we'll go buy this laptop we just found. He'll then return to the UK with both laptops, get a warranty replacement on the old one and then bring the new one back to the US in a couple of weeks and I'll take it :)

A year ago I spilled Gatorade on my laptop. I immediately turned it off and opened it up as much as I could to air out. I waited a good two days, having a fan blowing on it the whole time and luckily it booted fine. I was only out the keyboard ($75), which isn't as bad as loosing a $1500 laptop. Hopefully this will provide him some hope that all is not lost.

IB,
I spent my fair share of dollars at that Fry's when I lived in Mesa. I worked just around the corner from it on S 48th St. I remember going to the 'New Frys' in North Phoenix just after it opened and paying about $80 for 64MB of PC100 SDRAM...It really wasn't that long ago...

Well, I think the laptop main board is fsck'd. At least that's what the diagnostics point to.

At least I've got all the data off the HD..

It'll go back to the UK with the consultant and sent back to IBM I guess.

Might just have to check out that Fry's while I'm here, though I'm heading over to Scottsdale tonight for a night out
