hehe,

I am away at the mo' so just my server that is plugging away at DIMES...

I may add some more agents over the next few weeks - time is a problem though.

Aslong as I keep touch I can ramp it up later and stomp all over you :rotfl:

Well, I can only see Meep on the immediate threats list and I`m giving Fozzie a chance by not running another 5 agents.
Had to re-install a couple cos they kept dying as well and can`t see why there appears to be some difference between XP agents and Win2K in scoring.
Not much mind you but significant. may have to upgrade the "virtuals" to XP but I`ll leave the other 5 off to give Fozzie a chance as he`s huffing and puffing a bit :D

What sort of numbers are we talking about?

May be just a Dime but it also may be due to them being "Virtual machines".
I`ll upgrade them and let you know.

Well, I`m away for the weekend looking at a new posh pub the boys have bought called "the Firefly". It`s got a big office in the cellar which is near super cooled so I may just take advantage of the space to fire some of the old farm up. Only 3 dual PIII Xeons and some odd Athlon XPs but around 12 in all and "free electric and cooling" :D

Big problem with DIMES is the amount of time it takes for agents & scores to settle down. Always about 48 hours for it to level out.

Since the outage I have added 7 more VPC agents and currently 2 (to be 4) agents on another internet link. I was at 40-44k per day before, so at least 55k'ish should come through over the next few days...

Only time will tell :)

Yeah, you`ll get me soon as well cos most of my machines are busy doing other things just now (the ones with enough memory to run several VMs), and some machines are back with their owners and only running as and when.
TBH, I`m not too bothered as though I could add several machines, I have more important fish to fry.

have you bundled some agents together or using the same agent name for several installs? I do not see how you can have one agent performing so many measurements... when the number per second is capped

IronBits

How`s the bundling work IB? Just give them all the same number?
I`ve only got 2 machines working on this regularly now as the rest are farmed out and irregular or just too busy to run anything else.

IronBits
03-09-2006, 07:52 AM
I just assign them the same node number...
When I start one up, I chose 'this computer already has had Dimes on it before', then put in my userID and password, it fetches all the IDs that are being used, so I scroll down until I see the node I want to use and select it.
It warns about something, just click ok, and you're off and running.

IronBits
03-09-2006, 08:06 AM

I have just successfully created a VM using 45mb instead of the usual 64mb of memory, and the Dimes client still works!
I heard it would work in 40mb ...

That means for every 3 VMs I change, I can get another VM running for free! :D
Or in another words, 26 more clients. :rotfl:

Fozzie

40mb a VM eh.... what OS? I am running at 64mb atm on w2k, with 23 agents on one 2gb ram workstation.

IronBits
03-11-2006, 09:26 PM
Well, I'm not sure how to keep an eye on them, else I would be looking.
I'm just watching the hourly numbers...

All my boxen have a primary project running on the Host (Rosetta/BBC CPDN), plus the VMs running Dimes.
With 2GB of ram, I think ~25 VMs at 45mb, or 18 VMs at 64mb is maxed out, without going into swap space.
I haven't gotten up to the limit yet as I'm still trying to figure out if the Dimes client is working at 45mb. :looney:

IronBits
03-11-2006, 09:53 PM
Well I'm running 1 VM with the runAgent.bat file so I can watch what it does.
So far, it takes 10-15 minutes to load up the shared .dll files... and nothing else on the screen yet, but Dimes ICON is in the systray... /shrugs

PCZ, I would be very interested in what you find out!

This is what I was going by... not sure if it is VMware of MS VPC tho... the VM shows ~8mb free ram while it's running...

Memory recommendations for OS.
For Windows 2000 Pro I have had successful VMs run Dimes with as little as 40mb,
This means that on an XP box with 256mb you can run about 3 separate VMs, as long as this is all the box does.

For Windows XP I would recommend a minimum of 96mb, I havent tried any lower as yet and I mostly use 2000 as it has less overheads.

PCZ
03-11-2006, 10:15 PM

I find that any significant drop from 64mb for a virtual server causes it to, well, not really run. A big flurry of disk activity and then..... not a lot :)

It does slowly come to life but it took about 15 minutes.

I agree PCZ, i do not even know how these vservers are running with 64mb and running DIMES a treat, let alone 45. One thing I have found is that moving from VPC to Virtual Server helps a lot.

OK, I give in.
As everybody seems to be adding machines, I`ve added another 4 and the 2 not running full time will now be on mostly.
Should also add to my Rosetta as well.
Not much more but all my machines are busy anyway and need their resources for other things.
The new pub and nightclub are running well but it`ll be a while before I get to them to put machines in so Elf, Meep and Fozzie, do your worst.

Funny you should mention 1gb simms. :)

I was pricing some up today.

None of my Boxes at home have a lot of memory so VM duties have been spread out over quite a few of them.
This isn't a situation i'm happy with as it is a CPU hog.

So i plan to beef up the memory on a few boxes with weak CPU's and get the VM's onto them.

Looking at the UK online retailers it seems the cheapest 1gb dimms are around 50 quid + delivery.

IronBits
03-14-2006, 10:54 PM
Well crap! :bang:

I tried them in two different Opty rigs with 2 different mobos and they both only give me 3GB of ram.

I'll only be able to add about another 16 VMs or so... :swear:

even when you clone them, they still have to be renamed and rebooted. :bonk:

I don't think that the pipes are getting anywhere near maxed out.
Sometimes i only send the dimes traffic down the 8mb when i want the 22 for other purposes :)

It could be that the router is slowing down due to all the connections rather than the pipe being maxed out.
Try giving the router a daily reboot.

It used to happen to me a lot, now it doesn't. :rotfl:

Some routers just can't handle it, i have tested quite a few.

This is what i am currently using and they don't clag up.
They slow down a bit with lots of dimes activity though.
Linksys WAG354G on the 8mb
Netgear DG834GT on the ADSL 2

Stangely my Cisco 820 is the worst for clagging up.
It shouldn't really considering it costs 5 x as much as the Linksys / Netgears of this world. :(

Ah, did not realise we were being beaten in the dailies now.

Unfortunately until I move house I can't get any more agents up and running - net connection is already maxed out, it is only a lowly 2mbit (256k up) connection. When I move ill slap in ADSL2 and a work funded ADSL1 line that will give me more potential :)

Also running a Netgear router here, much more stable and efficient than the 3com and cisco ones I tried.

If PY wakes up and sorts his output that will keep us nice a even :)

Trouble is you let a foreigner into the top spot for the dailies. :(

Hey... I resemble that remark! And I'm only a semi-foreigner. :D

Yes we are getting beaten in the dailies.

Hardly surprising though with so few active members.

One of my tasks for myself this week is to get some vm's going... so many tasks, my opty165's arrived today, just need to pick up a couple of PSU's tomorrow :)

Yes thanks IB
Trouble is you let a foreigner into the top spot for the dailies. :(Ok, stop hogging all the WUs, back up to 108 Dimes clients.
New Switch and new cables seems to have helped a lot.
Haven't heard a thing on the shipping of that Dell SFF P3-933MHz box to build the Smothwall yet. :(

Good, I'll back away and give you some room. ;)
Actually, I'm still being choked badly by the router, as expected, so will wait until late next week when hopefully I can give that Smoothwall a go.
Besides, you didn't want me to pass you anyways right? :p :)

Oh alright, when I'm not using the computer or gaming, which is most of the time, I'll fire em up and choke it to death. :)
But I reserver the right to kill the choking demons at a whim. :)
I hope the Smoothy does the trick or else... /shrugs

If it's any consolation i think you are not alone seems quite a few folks are suffering from the choking problem.

SOHO routers just ain't designed for this type of abuse.

Actually my big CATS at work don't handle it well either.
It's fine if all the clients have Public IP's [Dangerous not something i would do]and you just route the packets but natting from the private address ranges really hits the routers CPU's hard.
I don't run any clients at work for this reason.

The only problem I`ve had with the C`s is dying memory, 3 times in 2 years, and 2 psus. Get a 7000 and trunk it up :looney:
Got an old Smoothwall box here IB, in an old AT miniature desktop box. Used to run ISDNs through it and a 3Com router. It`s got 2 ISDNs and a trio of Intel 10/100 server nics in plus a 2.1Gb scusi etc. Used to be a thin client box so it`s not much bigger than a big switch case, or 2/3 size of a rack switch but it needs an external psu. Think it still has WFW or summat like that on it plus some 3Com software. Can`t remember what the cpu or board is but it had enough clout to take 3 server loads. Seem to remember, come to think of it, it`s a PC450S so I assume it`s a PII 450. Circa `98 so it is probs a PII and I remember all the cards sit parallel to the board, including the cpu. Still got a stack of celerons and PIIs and some 933 PIII slots plus pairs of slot Xeons up to 900Mhz.
Anyway, I got rid of all the old Commodore stuff and such like, and the Fuji servers (I486) as well as anything 8086 and 8088 but I`ve kept an old Compaq with 2xP200s in and the rest of the bits and boards off several from 233 Cele upover....want old bits....see me first :)
Mind you, I don`t run enough VMs to worry about clogging up my 10Mbits and if I did, and had some spare cash, the fibre and router at the other end is good for at least 100Mb which is mebbe the next step if my friendly local cable guy is correct. Or trunk my normal cable connection onto the other one if it got desperate and get 2 IPs.
Oh well, enough of the nostalgia....back to sorting out the new Gigabyte tower...gotta figure out how to run the fans without the leds upsetting everyone......and figure out where I put some 5.25 to 3.5 drive carriers cos the stupid thing only takes 5 hard drives. Nice these new tool less boxes tho` :smoking:

Problem is all the natting eats up the memory.
It's fine on the sup 720's with loads of memory but the older sup 1a's with mfsc2 cards only have 64 or 128 MB

If i wanted to do a lot of natting i could use one of the spare 7200's but it isn't really a high priority and come to think of it the toys belong to my employer. :)

Now if IB could get a 7200 vxr off ebay loaded with memory he wouldn't have to worry about choking up.
A 3620 with fast e's and 64MB would do a fine job as well.

According to Jeff, if I were to turn of DHCP and assign each VM/boxen a fixed IP, the thruput would go up.
All in, this is what it looks like... router says I have 103 nodes, should be closer to 115.

I feel bad IB... I don't think the DHCP was what helped me. I ended up changing two things at once and I think it was the other thing that helped. I'd hate for you to go through the hell of switching everything over to assigned IPs and not have it help. For me, since I was using miniXP installs, turning off DHCP at the router didn't require me to change anything in any of my VMs(since miniXP doesn't have DHCP installed).

If you do go through with it, I'd be curious if it helps at all.

BTW, you guys are way more intelligent than me regarding router knowledge... I'm counting my blessings that I got lucky like I did. :D

Onward and upward!

The Netgears like fixed routes from my oldish memories.
I had the Cissy in here because I was an emergency route and backup station from my old employer. Till I found the taxman disallowed my electric
I also tried a 12000 ( all spares which I keep here despite being retired because they tend to evaporate from work) but that was silly and I don`t need the 72 cos I`m still on a chassis with fibre in ( Big Iron for my sins but it was going begging when we canned them and Telewest ( comms contractor for our combo systems) wasn`t bothered cos they did the same It`s big , it`s ugly, and no longer necessary but I got sick of ordering memory for the C.
Even had 2 flash roms in it...pain in the posterior altogether. Anyway, I can still get them on edu from my old college and Cisco Academy and they`re pretty cheap to buy that way.
What gets me though, is that fully loaded, the 7000 and up were considered Enterprise class and we had umpteen of them plus the rest of the range to run a man and half of Tyneside on a secure wan/lan system and the 7s were a total pain. The old Nors were a heap better and easier to run and even the BigIrons were easy good for a 622Mb cap with no probs to speak of.
Anyway.....gotta get back to the bench cos I just proved why raid 5 on 4 drives plus a spare is worth it. Doing a clone of a smaller raid 5 ide to a new 1Tb raid 5 sata and the ide card shorted out, took a channel out on the sata and killed 2 ide drives plus a sata one. Result, it` s limping (hard to tell the difference) on 3 sata drives and no data lost. But I`m out a chunk of drives and a raid card or two....hope the guarantee works with Maxtor and Highpoint :scared:
And I`m braindead just about after doing 30 hours straight....bit like the old days. Oh well, crispy duck for tea.... :hifi:
