I have the possible prospect of gifting a Linux computer in exchange for crunching(essentially leaving it on connected to a phone line).
Obviously there are problems that go along with that, which I'd appreciate help with.
First, I need something that only needs to be updated once a week. I'm considering two possibilities at the moment. Prime95 firstpass or Riesel Sieve sieving. Prime95 is pretty simple, just set it up and go, it'll work on a schedule. Riesel Sieve sieving is a little more complicated, but it's the one that I prefer. I would have to go to the location about once a month and add work, and one would hope I'd be able to set up a script(it would be on a phone line) that would dial in, send factors, and be able to confirm the sent factors(I'll have to figure out how to do this). The script would dial a phone number, transmit the factors, wait for confirmation. Then it would send me an email with 4 things. Pass/Fail for sending the factors, the fact.txt file(which contains the factors), the progress file, which would contain both the speed and where it's at in the file, and the next.txt file, which would tell me what's next in the queue(as a reminder)
Also, since I'd be paying for the Internet access, it would be nice if people couldn't simply connect and start surfing on my dime. Obviously, this would mean not having access to any browsers. Also, if the update feature in Fedora Core 4 doesn't already require a password to connect to the Internet I would have to add that feature.
I don't know what else to add, but any advice is welcome.
