Here's the situation: (for those of you who get bored, please scroll to the dotted line)

I'm not recovered enough from my illness to work full-time, and I'm assuming my job will be minimum wage or a little more(let's say $5.75-$6.00). I'll probably work anywhere from 12 to 20 hours a week. Also, because of the government assistance I'm on, there is a tax, fine, penalty(don't know the right word) after I make above a certain amount in a calendar month. The equation works as follows.

[(total pay)-$65]/2 plus the $65 back.

In other words, to explain the equation. The first $65 I make in a month is free and clear, but after that, for every $2 I make, they take $1 out of my government check. So if I work all weekdays and only weekdays(not knowing what my job will be, this is just an assumption) and assume I work 15/hr weeks at $6/hr that's about $360 a month. Assuming I don't pay taxes(since I'll probably get them all back anyway), after the fine, or whatever you want to call it, that's $212.50 a month.

So we'll call it $200. 15%($30) goes to my local church group(for those who believe in prayer, I asked God to forgive my lack of tithe when I was jobless, the 15% number(applied the way it is) has an extra 5% because of my conscience) $170 is left. I want to build my account up to at least $800(if it goes above $2000, than my SSI is taken away. I'm not the only one that thinks it's stupid that they won't let your bank account show more than $2000 no matter what your needs, or saving abilities, are) Because of my desire to build up my bank account, I look at the $170 and, not at the bank, but in my head and on paper, I put aside half of that as mad money and half to build up my account. Plus another $50(after social expenses coming out of money that I consider mad money out of my government allotment), I have $135 each month to "go wild."

Here comes the dotted line:

----------------------------------------------------------

For the next 3-4 months, after I get my job, I'll have about $135 to throw around, and then when my bank account gets a little healthier, maybe $220.

Given this and the fact that I'm a geek(even though my monetary income would not indicate it), how would you guys spend the money?

My thoughts on spending plans are as follows:

---Get enough money on my debit card(didn't mention it) to get it right at $200, and not over unless I'm planning an immediate purchase. That's about $65 away, and most store purchases are cash.

---Purchase the defrag software that I downloaded(a necessity that needs to be done ASAP)

Here's where it gets iffy:

---I badly want to upgrade my Tivo to one with a DVD burner and a MUCH bigger hard drive(about $350)...OR

---Buy a dual core to make as a diskless node, which would be my second, although the first one isn't even installed since I need a place to put it.

Have I bored you enough? This is more to post my thoughts than to get a response, but input is always appreciated.

heh, I have a lot of spare time, and an "All or nothing" attitude toward friendships, so I take more chances.

When I was in the hospital, I discovered that the most rambunctious(sp?) people got the most attention, so I channel my energy and time toward getting attention from people.

Of course, because of my anxiety disorder, it has it's limits. Also, I don't like to waste too much time with people who obviously don't want to be around me. Not a problem on the Internet, you just skip the post.

Or did I read too much into that "hum :umm:?" :D

Methinks you read way too much into it :hifi:

It was more like:
"huh, now there's an interesting problem"
:umm: I don't think I've ever had that much money to consider mad money so I dunno. Wonder if I can get in on it.

*grabs Jasong's "defrag" software....beats it with a baseball bat and then kicks it in the teeth*

Do -not- "buy" any defrag software. Though it is true that Windows "Defrag" is HORRIBLE, the only defrag software you'll ever need is Norton SpeedDisk. Yes you should "purchase" it but I'm assuming this isn't the software you have on your computer.

Nothing is better than Norton SpeedDisk (IMHO).

I forget who recommended it, but someone recommended a program called Perfect Disk. It works fairly well, but it costs $40.

Two questions: What is the price of Norton SpeedDisk and can it do automatic defrag in the background?

jasong, I would suggest that you save all your "mad money" in either a bank or with your parents (if you don't want Big Brother to find out about the money).

$135 isn't a whole lot these days. So save whatever you can until you are more financially stable before you actually want to use it for things that you don't really need yet.

There is a lot of free software out there go to www.download.com and do a search for what you need. People give reviews there that you can read and post.
Here is one for a free Lic defrag program

Others go for 5.00 to 500.00 But I do not think you need the one for 500.00 May be PY or Fozzie might Or not:jester:

Best software to defrag is Diskeeper.
Make here a list of all software that you would like to have.

That opinion would depend on morality, local law, and one's opinion of the general legal infrastructure of one's country. Some countries allow rampant piracy. In places like the US, most piracy happens on the Internet(because of relative anonymity.)

Right now, the rights of US citizens are slowly being eroded by the RIAA and other organizations, in the name of controlling piracy. The law doesn't seem to give a damn about the people who respect the law and, like me, just want to change DVDs and music CDs to other formats in order to enjoy them more.

I can 2nd the recommendation for Diskeeper (1 k) www.diskeeper.com, you can trial it and see if you like it, also has set and forget feature that basically sticks a task in your task list to an analysis and defrag at a specific time each day / week.
Oh and don't talk to me about Norton Speeddisk it FUBAR'd my system folder once many years ago, it somehow moved it from windows\system to \temp and thus windows was missing files totally.. had to do a manual fix on it and removed Speeddisk and the whole norton suite I had on forthwith.
Diskeeper works with any Windows OS for like 98 up.

Perfect Disk is exactly what it says "Perfect". It will defrag your system perfectly, especially if you use the Trend Tracking and offline defraging in conjunction with the Smart Placement Defraging. It'll seperate all your MFT zones and other junk away from your data.

I think I'll keep Perfect Disk and pay for, it works and I like it. One question came up though when I used it. Neither me nor my dad knows what MFT stands for.

What the heck is it?

Neither me nor my dad knows what MFT stands for.

It stands for Master File Table (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/ntfs/archMFT-c.html).

Jason -

one suggestion you might consider, if you're wanting to save some extra money beyond the allowable $2000, is a mutual fund. You can get them lots of places, and many of them have better interest rates than your local bank.

It may be something for you to research.

Guys, I just experienced something that feels like a God-given miracle.

I ran HD-Clone on my computer. Thinking I had a backup of my files on an external hard drive, I guessed at which hard drive I should clone to(there were no drive letters listed in HD-Clone). Unfortunately, I was dead wrong, but here's the miracle, IMO:

The first thing I did was install Opera on the hard drive where I was SUPPOSED to clone my main drive, which was totally blank. Opera installed without incident, but when I opened it, I discovered my old Opera settings.

Mind you, I installed on a totally blank hard drive. While I installed to the original directory structure(/program files/opera) the installation was to a totally blank hard drive. Sorry for repeating myself, but according to my admittedly limited knowledge of computers, this is a miracle occurring on a hard drive.

So, did Jesus touch my hard drive, or is there another explanation I'm not aware of?

Edit: Sorry, I posted to the wrong thread.

You can install programs to a empty hard drive if you like. Most settings are stored in the registry any how, so they should follow over.
