I get the feeling that every new numerical approach needs a distributed project. Where's the experimental part?
Everyday there's a new DC project, where do we stand?
I love math projects but what do I earn when a prime is found? Nothing, there's unlimited number of primes.

Why do any of is run projects? We all have our reasons, but if we don't get a reward in ANY form, we obviously aren't going to do it for long(unless of course we consider it a hassle to uninstall, in which case our reward would be not having to hassle with it, lol). Everyone who runs this or that DC project is in it for there own reasons. Everything from,"I want to find a prime," to "My kid wants to find a prime," in the case of the prime projects, and sievers for their own reasons, sieve. In other instances people think there is a sound scientific basis behind a project and participate for that reason.
Obviously, if you don't have a legitimate reason to run a project, you shouldn't run the project. And if you don't want to run the project, you shouldn't run it.
You need to run the project you feel comfortable with.
Although, if you know of a project you're not interested in, but the client is simplistic, you might rent your computers out as a source of income.(I can't figure out whether I'm serious about this, or not, so I'm not going to put a smiley, lol)

Primes can help contribute to number theory. Now you might not be some scientist who actually cares but when primes are found of massive proportions number theory develops just that much further and the better we understand how numbers work the better we can understand how many many more things work (in all sorts of math related fields such as physics and whatnot).
The most "well known" DC project ever has been SETI@HOME. Not 1 shred of evidence that alien life exists has been shown and yet it has still been the most written about and popular one TO DATE. :)
Many people only wish to run "medical" projects but most of these have yet to prove they've done much. Yeah FAD found a bunch of potential inhibitors...but no development from them has come yet.
There's a niche for everything, otherwise Oprah wouldn't still have a job (I HATE YOU OPRAH!). DC projects come and go. Why would anyone ever wanna crack 50+ year old Enigma messages? Because they can and they know someone out there wants to know to.
There's a reason for everything. You just have to decide what your reason is.

Heh, heh. Will we ever be told if it's ever found? I'm just wondering what sort of control governments have over this sort of thing. I realize that our crunching is on the Internet where there is much less risk of government intrusion, but I'm not completely confident about anything any more. The way I see it, the first PC to somehow discover ETI isn't just going to announce it to the world; there will need to be a verification process, and it is probably at that point that governments would interject themselves.
Now, for the record, I have my doubts about UFOs and SETI, which is why I exclusively do medical research for World Community Grid. And while I don't know much about Roswell or whether there is anything hidden there, or if the allegations of a coverup are just delusional, I did watch a very interesting show on the Discovery Channel a couple of nights ago about Colares, Brazil. I don't know what to make of it, but there seems to be some convincing evidence of something strange. Here is a website about it: http://ufologie.net/htm/colaresgevaerd01.htm, and there are many more via google.
As long as ET doesn't come after my homebrew, I'll leave it alone. :)
Cheers.
