Two Opteron 265s in an Asus K8N-DL w/2GB of ram @ 2.3GHz.
~10,000,000 cEMs/sec :smoking:

All I can really say to that is :allhail:

howmuch of a difference do you see with the Reg memory compared to the 165 at 2.3G for example.

What are your memory timings?

CAS# Latency 2.5 clocks
RAS# to CAS# 4 clocks
RAS# Precharge 2 clocks
Cycle Time (TRAS) 8 clocks
Bank Cycle Time (TRC) 12 clocks
DRAM Idle Timer 16 clocks

Here is the cpuz report.
delete the .txt part of the extension ;)

Interesting, your running the memory at 166Mhz.
Did you test 200Mhz? Just curious I'm thinking about getting a dual opteron as my next upgrade the only disadvantage I see is the requirement on the memory. 200+ Mhz at Cas2 is pretty much out right b/c of the registered... not sure.

vjs,

the memory will be 200 but downgraded to 166 to allow the overclock from 1.8Ghz to 2.3Ghz :) Which would put the memory back close to 200 anyway, otherwise the memory would limit the overclock..

Hey Ironbit,

I've been looking around at upgrading my dual ~2.3G Barton socket A system.

That Asus board just keeps on looking better and better it's down around 220 on-line. Thought I'd pop in and ask a few questions please feel free to make some suggestions.

First a side note on O/S support of dual processor dual core.
Since I'd be using it as a home machine with some gaming. I'd probably be forced to use WinXP Pro 32, also considering I already own it... I just find it funny that MS doesn't support dual core dual processor under winXP Pro, if I'm not mistaken. Yet Intel is trying to force software makers ( Oracel) that use a per processor licencing agreement to think that dual core processors still fall under single processor licencing. I think intel should start with MS first.

I like the idea of the dual processor opterons especially b/c of the memory sharing between the processors.

I already have 2 sticks of 1G PC3200 Registered Ram from the socket A system so that's a start.

So the question is if you were to do it again would you get a different board like the TYAN with 64/100 support (I do use an SCSI adaptec 39160).

Second do you think I should go with 2 246's or one 265. I'd be getting another 2 sticks in the short term.

Performance advantage would first go towards the single 265 with 2 sticks in dual channel as opposed to 2 246's each in single channel. But when I add another 2G the 2 - 246's with 4 sticks would probably out perform the 265... (assuming I can clock them the same)

Anyways what do you think?

Also I'm still having problems with the CPUZ you posted, it stated the memory is at 165 Mhz CPU/14 memory.

I realise the HTT is at 257 so that's 257/200 X 1.8 is 2.313G ... it still looks to me as though the memory is running at 165Mhz not 200.

But then again...

257/200 * 166 = 213 Mhz <-- but I didn't think it worked that way.

I always though the memory speed was CPU/(some number) and you didn't have to account for the HTT difference.

Well I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Another aspect is the price of single core 2xx series is coming down, might even start with 250's.

Thanks in advance dude.
