Okay, I think my drive is shot but I'm gonna make sure from ya'll before I run out and buy another.

The Device Manager displays my DVD-Drive by its name. When I go into Windows explorer as simply "CD Drive". There are -no- drivers for this drive since its really a Lite-On but OEM branded by Sony and Sony doesn't support it at ALL. Put in media to the drive and click the "CD Drive" and it says "D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."

So yeah, not happy. Anyone got any suggestions?

Also, when I was installing programs such as CloneDVD and Roxio 7.5 the computer would "forget" what the drive was and put an error next to the device in the Device Manager but when the programs were uninstalled everything was fine.

P.S. If you notice a drop in my OGR and RC5 it's cause my A/C broke and they have to bring a crane out and drop a new one in via the roof which won't happen until AT LEAST Monday. The house is extremely hot and the disconnected the fan motor so we don't even have any form of air circulation in the house.

Just one thing you should try before throwing it away:

Try to change the IDE-cable!

It happened to me that Windows wouldn't see none of my two drives and the other day I build a new computer and some programs had trouble finding the the DVD-writer.

In both cases it was a faulty cable. One was a rounded one prettty new, and the other was a fresh out of the box....

So give it a try!

Yes unplug all cables and reset them also put a driver or program CD in the drive to see if it reads it

Switched out the cable. The computer started reading it as the drive it should be.

Installed Roxio 7.5 on my computer and now the drive isn't recognized by Windows. Roxio must not support it. Gonna uninstall it and install CloneDVD and restart. If the drive comes up as CD Drive again then these programs are doing something to the hardware and/or Windows to make it freak out about the drive. It's a Lite-On SOHW-1633S drive but since it was bought as OEM from Newegg.com I got stuck with a Sony DW D22A drive (which is Sony's brand and totally unsupported by them).

I'll give an update here soon.

Seems to be working now with CloneDVD. The computer dropped the classification of the drive to CD Drive there for a few but then brought it back up to DVD-RW Drive. So weird. Hopefully it'll stay working. If not I'll buy a new one and stomp on this one.
