Project on Grid Computing

Guys, I'm trying to get into a project about Grid Computing here at my University in Hamburg.
They want to find out if there realy is a market for grid computing and what motivates people to donate their time and money to such a projekt.

Right now I will try to write some kind of summary so that everybody has some basic knowledge.

I will add questions as I run across them, but two for starters:

Which one was the first DC project? SETI would be my first suspect...

What kind of problems are ideal for DC projects?

Any answers are very welcome, especially since this might become my diploma thesis

GIMPS was actually first, but SETI/Dnet made it 'known'.

The best projects are ones that break down into smaller chunks easily, but still require large amounts of CPU time to give an 'answer' to.
