View Full Version : Welcome pogueatl
Welcome to the team.. I've actually been to Marrietta a few years ago..
We are a friendly bunch of people who are interested in using our PC's to do distributed computing. It's fairly simple and there are lots of different projects out there you can participate in. Some of them are researching protein folding, others are looking for Prime Numbers. It usually just involves downloading a piece of software and starting it up.
Any questions let us know!

Actually I do have some questions. I seem to be up and running, but I am trying to understand all the terminology. What are credits and what do people get mad because they dont get them for? Do they do something? Where do those charts I see in everyones comments come from and what do they mean? If I want to work on a certain type of disease or cure, how does one go about doing that? What is crunching? See, I told you I had some questions. haha!!! Anyway, if you can explain some of these to me, it would be greatly appreciated!!!
thanks

Welcome pogueatl.
Stats are basically points on the score board so you may compare how much of something you have done in a project as opposed to your other team mates or between teams.
We are the number 1 Distributed Computing team in the World. ( http://dc-vault.com/ )
Feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will definitely get on it.
Welcome again... a round of beer on the house

Jami,
if you got to http://stats.free-dc.org/statstool.php (whilst also logged into the forums you will be able to setup your own stats. You need to be running 1 or more distributed computing projects so that you have an id. Then you can have one of the stats signatures. Once you do this I can help set it up for you if needed.
Out of interest, what spec of PC(s) are you running?

from the Rosette@home website.
So, are you participating in the R@H project or some other project?
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask as we will be more than happy to help you out.

I guess I am, but I dont think I quite understood it correctly. I want to do medical research ones, like cancer and stuff and this one apparently is about some sort of strand or something but makes no sense to me. What manager do most people use to do this and are there particular ones for particular versions?

okay, i have another question. i am looking for a medical research one to do. I went to the Active Distributed Computing Projects and saw that one on cancer research. i went to the website to look at it, but i noticed that i would have to download another manager. I guess my question is, are the different managers BOINC and GRID.ORG UD manager for different types of research, medical versus something else?
Yes they are different.
Basically BOINC is just a framework that DC projects use. BOINC stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing and Rosetta@Home is one of the projects that uses the Open Infrastructure that BOINC provides.
As for UD/Grid.org, they have their own client. So, if you have BOINC installed, then I would suggest that you start with BOINC first before venturing out to other projects.
Have you attached a project to your BOINC client?

For a list of BOINC based projects, head over to the official BOINC website at: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/
For medical research projects using the BOINC infrastructure, you should be looking at Rosetta@Home, Predictor@Home and World Community Grid.
I personally do not use a Manager because I only run one project. I believe the Manager simplifies the process of attaching your client to a different BOINC project.

Welcome pogueatl!
What is mercenaries?
Answering your question here. Basically we are a group of people that crunch under the same nick, Free-DC Mercenaries, or in another term, we are a Free-DC sub team. More about us in here (http://www.free-dc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=10908). Any question feel free to ask here or by PM.
Carlos
i found the one i need for world community grid, the only one that i need now is predictor@home and like i said above, it is not even listed on the stat page to put the stats, unless it is listed in a way I dont know.
I really want to thank you for your help!!!!
You have to have sent at least one result to them to appear on the stats. (and in Predictor's case, the result has to be validated which may take a day) Once you do. you'll show up here (http://stats.free-dc.org/new/teamstats.php?proj=pah&team=Free-DC)

Hello Pogueatl, don't worry BOK is the stats wizard around here, if something isn't right with the sigs, tell him, it gets fixed, something wrong with one of the actual stats pages (all of which can be found at http://stats.free-dc.org/ ), tell him he fixes, something not right, forum in wrong place, well he does that too, although sometimes he likes to delegate that to the other admin stuff, well they have to have something to do, ain't that right Tin butt I mean Target Butt I mean IB :P
