View Full Version : Modern AMDs do a third-again more ops per hertz than Intels. Correct?

That's the basic question. I figure that if it's correct, it would be beneficial for a computer buyer to know, which is the reason for making a brand new thread.

So, basically, I'm looking for confirmation of whether or not this is true, whether it was true in the past, and any opinions on this for the next 6 months.

This is currently the case.
A64's are faster clock for clock than P4's.

However this situation is about to be reversed.
Intels new desktop chip the Conroe is seriously fast.
This will hit retail in about 6 weeks.

Pop on over to xtremesystems.org and check out the benches, a lucky few have pre release chips.

Yeah, I heard about that.

Things are definitely going to get interesting. Especially for the prime-finding projects.

I believe however AMD is hitting back with it's new chips all based on Socket AM which will be by the looks of things an Overclockers Dream that and run cooler than current chips of the same ilk..

As an AMD man since the K7, i hate to say that INTEL are going to kick some serious butt when the conroe ships. It should be avaliable here from July 23rd. If stories are true, and i have seen nothing to change my mind, the AM2 is going nowhere fast (well at the same speed as the 939!!)

80% of my boxes are AMD, so i can't see why they took their eye off the market and screwed up so bad!!!:swear:

Time will tell:umm:

yeah, reports on AM2 are that the performance of the current AM2s is about the same as the non-AM2 Athlon X2s/64s they replace. i would expect to see minor bumps after that, but nothing major until K8L or whatever the next K8 update is called.

in the meantime conroe will hit the market as Core 2, which looks sweet. I'm looking to upgrade my desktop machine around the end of the summer, and it may be my first Intel system since my dual celeron, those many years ago...

My thoughts.

It certainly is a turn around from Intel.
All those years of netburst and the clock speed is everything policy.
To the Conroe with relativly low clock speeds and power consumption.

AMD now has a big problem.
This time round the deathstar is biggger, badder and has armour over the exhaust port :)

From a consumer point of view though it will be good.
Intels new chips are quite cheap relative to the high prices we have become accustomed to paying.

Then there are all the old stocks of the current P4 range to be shifted at bargain prices.

Also AMD will have to drop there prices as well, about time i say as they have been screwing us over with the X2 for far too long.

This will be good for consumers in the short term but if AMD do not counter the Conroe, Intel will take back the market completely and then will be free to hike prices and hold back new tech.

So we need AMD to lick there wounds and come out fighting around XMAS.
Hope it happens.

BTW

AM2 currently doesn't really do anything for performance.
AMD needs to get that new socket accepted though because any next gen chip they come up with will need the DDR2 interface.
Also DDR2 is getting more mainstream hence cheaper all the time and soon it will be cheaper than traditional DDR 1.

It's going to be hard to sell it to upgraders though, needs new MB, CPU and RAM.
Performance benefits aren't currently there and for the same cost or maybe less you will be able to have Conroe.
