View Full Version : I might soon need a project that won't run on battery power.

My dad might("might" being the important word) install a wireless network. If he does, I'm going to spend my savings on a laptop. So, I need a project that will notice that the computer has gone to battery and reside in RAM until it gets plugged back in.

It would be nice, though not totally necessary, to pick a project that generates less heat in the laptop than the others.(I don't know if this is even possible if you assume 100% cpu utilization)

I'm already aware of Prime95 and it's ability to slow down according to a schedule(can it be done for things other than primality proving in Prime95?). If possible, I'd like a basic list of what projects notice battery power. Also, although I might go my own way, I'd like to know which the team would prefer for me to run.

I'd just do OGRp2 or RC5-72 that way you can easily right-click the cow in the systray and "Pause" it when you unplug it and then when you plug it back in just click "resume". Nice and easy and whatnot. Plus it'll cover both procs. If you get an AMD processor you can use RC5-72 project, OGRp2 for an Intel. :)

You can add any of the BOINC projects to your list too - the BOINC client can be configured to suspend all work when it's running on batteries.

I've also noticed Prime95 has a battery power feature.

BOINC is probably the best choice. Although...

Another option I'm considering is to run Riesel Sieve with a "wait for me to connect before you upload or download" option. The LLR portion will be fairly predictable, so I can simply download a certain number of "work units"(they're generally referred to as k/n pairs) and have it process when I know I won't be using it.

I've just recently begun running the BOINC client again to do Rosetta@Home and it seems quite stable and friendly. I'm now adding about a machine a week with it.

Better step it up just a notch, before beth133 (http://stats.free-dc.org/new/userstats.php?proj=rah&name=84148) stomps ya :Pokes::)

And they are computers, which can run machines, but not the other way around ;) :jester:
