What do those symbols at the bottom left of each Window mean?

If you look way below the usernames listed by each person's post on the left, you see some symbols, one of looking very much like a yield sign.

What the heck do they mean?

one could alway place one's cursor over it

I always seem to have a green one too!! No matter how fast i log on and off, it's green. Kind of like the fridge light, is it still on when the door is closed??

If someone invented technology where all you had to do was touch a piece of furniture to know who sat there, and no one bothered to tell you that the furniture had this special quality, how obvious would the tech be? ;)
