Okay, I was having an okay day..
Helix - thanks man, package arrived today ahead of schedule *I was shooked* I should have known better though..
Don't you just love the time of year when your car is due it's MOT (people outside the UK might not know what that is so bear with me).
We I had mine booked in.. I figured bits and peices and maybe a bit of welding near the drivers door as well it seems to attract water..
WRONG! One of the front supspention springs needs fixed, car is booked in but Im just praying I can get a day off and get it done quicker..
I go to a mates to see if he's in. I score he is, I get his old DVD writer since he's got a new one, some blank dvd's and a Silent PSU :D
I get home, open box from HvS :D and then switch off my XP2600+ in prep for the swap, swap everything over and well that's where it started to go wrong. It's after 4pm so nearest comp shop is shut..
I think it's XP being a fecking PITA... I remember you could boot into safe mode in 98 and remove all the PCI steering all the drivers, reboot and it would ask you for new mobo driver CD, XP not let me do that it just reboot after reboot..
Okay, possible new board / old board issue (after repair has no joy - I can't seem to remember Admin Password :( ) I swap them back...
Fires up reboots, gives me grief I go okay boot from CD - hit F11 to get boot menu up, booting from CD...... Machine goes off..
As you can imagine  isn't word  (mild PANIC!!!) has the chip gone - my precious Xp2600 no just the PSU hmm something smelt off.. New Silent booted it up but alas didn't fit..
I had to go get another one - temp like 300W less power but It would do...
I try it... same thing it booted once then ...
Primary HDD not showing up in HDD list... It tries to boot via Network node as nothing else has a bootable place..
Im on my Back up PC right now.. The Master from other machine is here on 2nd IDE cable attempting to ghost as much as possible - 80Gb accross 3 partitions is WAY too much too LOSE... It might be fine now, I could probably boot it but  new drive defo needed..
Thanks though HvS I'll get the other parts installed I hope.

Well it turns out it's "XP" I guess it doesn't tolerate Hardware changes as well as 98 used to do... FUNKING PoS OS... Can't even safe mode to clear out the old hardware - Yeah again MicroSHAFT scores an own goal. IF i didn't have to be running XP I would still be running 98se.. It makes me wanna go Linux but I game so Linux is not an option :|.

Do you have a 98 boot disk ? If Not pick it up at bootdisk.com
Boot to DOS from the disk and do scanreg/restore at the A: prompt go back to the start or a good date

I'm in a somewhat similar situation. I want to ditch XP very badly and switch to Linux, but I'm extremely gunshy. I had a Linux computer at one point, but it was just for DCing(got some good work out of it though).

What I really want to do is buy a Linux computer and get it synced with my Tivo. I'm not a hacker, so I'm thinking it would be nice if the transfer utility worked under Wine. Then I'd use Wine again to remove the encryption, which basically happens as fast as the hard drive can transfer data. Then convert everything to avi.

My first goal, though, is to buy a laptop. I'm hoping I can get my dad to throw in about $300-500 as a middle of December Christmas present. I'm not going to press the issue, though, because I cleaned up for my birthday, getting an air-conditioner and the setup I'm typing on.

it's a new motherboard' clean install is best.

When linux is as straight forward to use as windows i may switch:Pokes:

There is a pretty easy way to swap boards and keep your WinXP and all programms running:

I don't exactly know how it is called in english, but it should be something like "Repair Installation"

This is what you do:
Boot from a full WinXP CD (Recovery CDs won't work), when asked the first time if you want to repair the WinXP Installation hit "No" (thats important!)

Then you will get the next screen where you can select the different drives and partitions. Select the current WinXP installation an select "Repair". Now don't be scared, a lot of system files will be deleted at first! But then new drivers and stuff will be copied from the WinXP CD and later you will have to install all the other hardware drivers and reactivate WinXP..

But! Your programms and personal files will all be there and working!

Of course you should do a backup of important data before trying this, but I have done this a couple of times with W2K and WinXP machines without any problems.

Only thing to remember: Only say "Yes" to repair the second time, not the first time!

At this rate you will be stopped

Will email micro$oft to see if they want to help :looney: :looney:

you should see if you can still get W2K
