I downloaded a DC app from here, (http://www.peerfactor.fr/) but I can't make heads or tails of it. My mother translated the buttons for me, but the literal translations seemed ambiguous to me.

A picture of the main window is on that page. Could someone please print each snippet of French and it's English translation, please?

Edit:Never mind, apparently, it's not available for use in the US. At least, not at the moment.

Pretty sure it is a peer to peer thing, not DC. Mentions receiveing "gifts." If you still want something like that, there are many ones you can choose from in English, and they will probably have what you are looking for instead of French stuff. Hope that helps. Someone who really knows French could probably be more precise about what it says.

You may have seen this already but there is a good summary of the project at http://distributedcomputing.info/ap-internet.html#peerfactor

As Jason says, it is not open for US citizens at the moment.

Thanks for setting that right Petey. I guess it is a little bit DC and a little bit P2P. Jasong, Maybe you could get a French person to sign up for you, and give them a song or whatever every so often for helping you.

in fact this project is about a distributed hard disk.

you throw files in the directory and the files are saved on other people hard disk.
when you need your file back, you search for it on the network.
with this app they claim you can exchange free legal music, ...
the other part of the project is a free web hosting: you host some files, and when somebody try to view the web page, their server redirect to your computer. there is loadbalncing between computers connected.

the more you stay online, the more chance you have to get the prizes.

the prizes are :
- unlimited legal download of games for one month (translate "unlimited" by "maximum 3 games", hey this a french stuff :gone: )
- unlimited download of music (up to xy mp3, still in France )

conclusion:
- you can get all the files you want without peerfactor.
- distributed hard-disk is not good. (imagine as there must be redundancy, for each mega you send, you must have something like 5 or 10 mega of other people files on your hd)
- distributed hosting: i prefer to pay 5-10$ amonth to have only one contact and be able to say "hey I pay for this service, it must work 24/7"
-the rewards are low, very low, i would even prefer to have boin credits than those things.

for info: french is my mother language.
