Ruh-roh, if you look at the stats page: http://stats.free-dc.org/new/teamrank.php?proj=rah&team=Free-DC

You will see that DPC will overtake us in Rosetta in 17.8 days. Their output is about 2x what ours is right now.

Yes I have seen that over the past month and have all ready moved a few nodes back to Rosetta to slow there advance a bit:thumbs:

2 dual cores and the old 3200+.

Someone ought to nudge that Helix von Smelix, who is languishing down in 3082nd spot, gonna have to use Lauren's Hubble to see him from my lofty "cough" 1359th. :Pokes: :Pokes:

Any estimate on the number of machines that would be needed to truly slow/stop the DPC?

Fozzie
11-15-2006, 03:41 PM
50 good spec CPUs should do it.

I see Lauren is ramping so is PCZ, and maybe Bok too. A nudge of the IB/Elf collective :borg: and that would cover it.

Maybe people are looking to give the Cows a little sniff of competition , and then turn on the pain.

Who knows.:Pokes:

OK I raise 25 Nodes I just pointed another 25 Nodes back to Rosetta
Anybody want to call or raise me:smoking:

If we wait much longer we can use Cow dong for poker chips:rock:

Maybe when I get finances settled, and upgrade some machines to 'good spec', I'll help out on Rosetta. I'm still trying to find processors to pimp on F@H :)

I know many of you guys/gals aren't big on BOINC, but The Cows are getting pretty close over here and they may even have some points in reserve for the usual DPC :dump:

So if you feel like a scrap with, pretty much the only real opposition out there, then Rosetta is where it is at.

We currently need to double our output.

It's a big ask but if you have some spare you could lend us for say 4 weeks until the cows get demoralised and go grazing elsewhere.

Aw Fozzie yer makin' me feel guilty. I tried to install the boinc-client on one of my playpen FreeBSD servers and I nearly had a heart-attack! Cows are making a surge to regain SoB #2 spot so I'll just throw 2 more FreeBSD boxes on that.

Been absent awhile on hospital duty...well....I been back in dock and NO BLOODY ACCESS.
Firing a dual AMD back up with 2.5Ghz each of AMD badness when I can persuade Win 2K3 to load off of a somewhat scratched disk. (Only got the demo disk and my legit ex-work code don`t work on it for some strange Micro$ reason). My freebie copy won`t be replaced apparently and they`re not gettin £260 out of me again.

:|ot|:, but the Einstein@Home project has a beta application for FreeBSD which works perfectly for me on 6.2-PRERELEASE. We're #107th on that project and not really catching up, so definitely could use the help.

http://www.klausact.com/images/accents/cow_whip.gif again.

Maybe you should try and pimp Who? he's got the #1 & #2 spot on RAC at Rosetta@Home ( A Core2Quad @ 4GHz and a Dual Xeon(core2)Quad at default)

Or pop out and buy some Core2Duo/Quads since these since on rosetta@Home.

Well after a hiatus of sorts (cursed colleagues actually needing those machines for actual "research" :swear:  ) I can probably steal some cycles on them again.

and good news, the new Conroe E6600 is now under my desk, and goes on Rosetta

and even better news, our lab is getting a pair of new Dell Poweredge 2950s with 2 quad core Xeon E5320s .... can't wait to see what kind of numbers those babies put out...

"uh, i mean of course, i'm just running a burn-in test! we do want to make sure they actually work, don't we??

If you happen not to run anything else on them (really what use whould they be as servers ;-)

You will have the number #1 cruncher at rosetta, since the current number #1 (ok not there anymore since a switch to Vista) are the 2.66GHz one's

Getting on for ~ 3500 RAC

Scoofy12
12-05-2006, 11:44 PM
sweet :) i'm sure i'll at least be able to try it out. I'm not sure exactly what use they will be put to yet, but i'm sure i won't be able to run all the time. so we'll see what i get. assuming it really is the fastest thing on 2 (mounting) rails, how long do i have to run it before its official? is it based on RAC, because if so, that takes a while to build up.

i've been out of things for a while, but i seem to have it in my head that running optimized clients is no longer the big help it once was? like they put in redundance similar to SETI? is this true, or should I try to dig up the latest optimized BOINC client again?

You sure can. It's a Dell Poweredge 2950 with 2 Xeon E5320 quad-cores and 16G of RAM. a similar configuration quotes on dell.com for about 8 grand (although our university discount got it under 10k for 2 of them so we didnt have to bid it out )

and its ok about the screenshot, you can still read top output :)

Shouldn't be too difficult to guess the credits/day...

Your stats show a sudden kick in production
http://stats.free-dc.org/new/userstats.php?proj=rah&name=4488

That's looking around 3000+ jump ;) nice.

As for optimised boinc clients, no real point with rosetta anymore (only QMC, Xtremlab and a few others would see an effect now). All they really did to the core client was fudge the benchmark, though for Linux that was needed.
Rosetta@home now uses a rolling average type system (not redundency). So linux clients get what the deserve, so do processors that crunch faster (or slower) than the benchmark.

Though seen as your computers are hidden you cannot see you computer individually in the stats, or get your name on the board
RAC a bugger to figure out takes at least a weeks...

Err it's a bit close

I`m sweating blood trying to get a new dual F type online (whic is 2x5ghz of goodness) but its not being cooperative. Give in for now but I`ll put up the one proc running stable and 5.5Ghz b4 I go back into dock on the 16th.

Scoofy,
The RAC maybe lower than I told you since I was thinking 2.8GHx not the 1.8GHz models (got confused with your Core2Duo's I guess)

Either way, still nice :D

yeah, that jump isnt just the new machine, around that same time i also restarted my new Core 2 E6600 desktop and restarted another 1 or 2 machines that had been running intermittently. but yeah, thats due mostly to the new machine.

and, i went ahead and unhid my computers. the machine, http://boinc.bakerlab.org/show_host_detail.php?hostid=370057 , had a RAC of 741 yesterday which ranked it in the top about 110 or so, but it didnt run for part of yesterday because someone was using it. i just started it back up so maybe it will get back up there :)

Nice one all the DPC

Guess after all the <ribbing>(steaks?) they`ve had we can let them have this one for a while :santa::thumbs:.

But if I get my Win2K3 key and disk problems sorted, I`ll stick another 5Ghz on there when I get over Xmas and receive my back post which should have a lubberly new DFI in there so I can get my secondary server back online and get some more dc power back.
Once again the police have one of my old dual Athlon boards as it is now evidence after being couriered back to my son and being subject to a robbery so I`m 2x2.5Ghz down on Rosetta anyway and the cops won`t release the evidence till after the court case which means I`m gonna have to send the son a spare 940 board with a single 240 in it if i can find it under the pile of other boards building up on the waiting list.:umm:
