I bought some computer parts from jokern the other day, my dad and I finally got around to working on them tonight. We've hit a snag.
You know all those tiny connectors on the motherboard? We need a way to figure out what goes where, with as little guesswork as possible. We tried entering all the long strings of letters and numbers into Google in the hopes of a hit, but no dice.
Any advice?

You have to provide us with a little more info then this if you want to get help.
There should be some Model # or even the a maker of the MB even a chip # might do
But without anything all I can say is " That go's there but don't ask where that is ":rotfl:

Step 1
Use that squidgey grey stuff between your ears.
Step 2
Talk to Jokern they may know the make model of the mobo
Step 3
The model and revision will be on the board

Jasong, from what I remember you should be able to find what you need here. I can't remember which revision the sis was so I am linking to both. You can look on the motherboard to see which one it is. Then download the manual and you can find the information you are looking for.

Is there anyplace I can go that will help me match up the colored wires?
We can get it to START booting up, then it says something about trying to find IDE drives, and then it hangs. It gives the right info about the RAM and the motherboard. But, other than that, nothing.
Question: I'm not sure what's on the hard drive, it might not be a bootable hard drive. Is there a jumper or something that will get it to boot from the cd or dvd drive?

I can get it to boot with a Linux CD, but it's a minimal installation, so very confusing to me.
I'm not looking to use it as anything but a cruncher, so I'll ask you guys, should I just go to the online instructions(something I've put off) or try to get an easier to understand version? It's very possible I already have everything I need, but I'm not sure.
It's a Gentoo mininal install by the way.

Sorry, Mr. ADD here, remember. I'm past the BIOS and didn't post the fact.
I'm installing Fedora Core 3 at the moment, going to take about an hour. Tomorrow, I'm going to bring it in my room, connect it to the Internet and update everything.
Then I'm actually going to sit down and read the stuff the strangely absent Chuck advised me to read.
You guys remember Chuck, right? He was a major player in the JJSieve program. Hope he's okay.

Last night, I couldn't get an important file(at least it looked important) to install, so overnight I downloaded an installation DVD. Unfortunately, my DVD burner "forgot" it was a DVD burner. I'll have to deal with that at some point, but at the moment, I'm downloading the cd version of Fedora Core 6. In a couple hours, I'll attempt that.
Hopefully, it'll work.

Long story short, I had some false starts. I ended up installing a rather old(not sure HOW old) Fedora Core 1.
So now I ask the following question(s):
If I want to update to, say, the stuff in Fedora Core 5, will it update to that automatically, or is there some trick to it? The reason I ask, is it only gives me two "channels" as options: a Fedora Core 1 channel, and a channel that looks like it's for updates in general.
Why on earth would you install FC1??
Major pain to update it, scrap it and install FC6.

In that case, I need help with my Windows XP computer. It refuses to accept any DVDs as burnable. I'm almost positive the software is screwed up, but I don't know how to fix it. It can detect DVD-Rs and RWs, but the software doesn't seem to be aware it has the ability to burn DVDs. Should I reinstall the software? burnatonce I think it is.
Never mind, I think I WILL try to reinstall the software.
Wish me luck.

Reinstalling the software didn't work. This thread isn't over, but I'm starting a new one to my DVD burner to realize it IS, in fact, a DVD burner.

Okay, I thought the motherboard stuff was done, but judging from some errors in the past and the one I got now when I tried to install FC6, I'm thinking the connectors from the DVD drive were accidentally switched with the ones from the hard drive.
I'm done for the night, tomorrow I'm going to do some research and see if I can find something to guide me on the connector locations.
It was a major error if I'm right about what was screwed up, I feel lucky I didn't "let the smoke out."
