This is my thread for installing Linux. My setup is a single core AMD computer rated at 3000+ with 1 Gig of RAM and, I think, a 22Gig hard drive. It's connected to the Internet, though I haven't been able to do anything significant. I'm stuck on the fdisk command.

Typing in fdisk /dev/hda gets me "Unable to open dev/hda". Typing in fdisk /dev/sda gets the same result, with the obvious letter difference.

I'm basically following the advice of the "handbook" at www.gentoo.org and this has got me stuck. I know the hard disk works because it already has Fedora Core 1 on it. I'm going to try to boot into Fedora Core 1, whatever my result, I am then going to bed to worry about this tomorrow morning or afternoon.

Looks like it boots successfully. Damn.

Any ideas?

type the following and search for whatever device it put your hard drive as

dmesg | more

press space for scrolling

Depending on how your cd drive and hd are hooked up, it may well have your hard drive as /dev/hdc (IDE) or /dev/sdc (scsi or sata) (i.e. your cd drive first as /dev/hda)
