Server Matrix (http://www.servermatrix.com) who are the hosting company for this server have just released a new line of servers.

One of them in particular looks very tempting..

For $199 per month (which is a little more than I pay right now) we'd get a Conroe class Xeon, 250Gb drive, 2Gb ram and 2500Gb bandwidth per month.

It would be nice to be on Mysql 5 and the later PHP versions (as I'm just too scared to upgrade the current one :) ) to take advantage of some of the new features.

Unfortunately to increase the Ram would be a one off payment of $700 to go to 4Gb, so I'm not in a position to do that at the moment, though I wonder if there might be a discount seeing as we upgraded the memory on this server not too long ago.

These can actually go up to 16Gb Ram!

If the Google Ads on the stats pages generate much I'll reconsider

Have the google ads generated anything yet?

Bok

yes,

some. Not huge but decent I think. It's only been a few days though so we'll see what it's like after a week and a month as I'd expect it to settle down then.

so, how does it work, everytime we click an add you get some small amount of money?

Bok

yes, something like that. Though I think it's more complicated thats the general idea.

Google ads?

Have I mentioned how much I like Firefox + Adblock? :) (I'll be sure to view the stats page with IE once in a while just to click the ads... ;))

They are on the webpage...not pop ups or anything...i see them and I also use firefox. Everyone should click them as they help bok out.:Pokes:

yeah, but in forefox you can block almost any part of a page using adblock and you never see it..

Thanks for the clicks guys, it all helps!

I can`t find them.....

They are all over the stats pages. Either at the top or down the left hand side.

Unless you are blocking google ads within Firefox that is :)

I've got a query into Servermatrix to see if I can re-use the 2Gb expansion on this box on a newer conroe, should be both DDR2 so I don't see why not...

OK, first time I`ve ever bothered editing the adblock stuff. Never thought we carried ads but makes sense. Mebbe you could do some specific exception filters for those of us who want to help the ad revenue and don`t normally think of this Bok? Anyway, I use Google a lot and often follow some of the ads out of curiosity. Just my jackdaw brain going at it normally or mebbe my (2nd or 3rd) childhood curiosity getting the better of me and leading me astray Hmmmm, now I seem to have lost the smilies..... ;-( too complicated.....might just go back to sleep.

update.

Looks like I can't move the memory :(

The google ads aren't really generating much, so I'm not going to put more outlay on a bigger server (3 hits in total yesterday :( ...)

So, I'm talking with servermatrix now about upgrading the OS to RHEL 4, so we'll at least get the advantage of mysql 4 (yes it's on 3 at the moment). That could happen within days, so if you miss the announcement - forum will be down, stats will be down etc. Depending whether there are problems, I'm not sure how long it will take to get it all back up, but I'll try and give a lead time.

If there are major problems I'll post over at AMD Users (http://www.amdusers.com)

Of course it may not even happen, but I expect so. Doesn't cost that much to haev this done. Gets a new drive and they slave the old drive too at least temporarily..

random interest question about the ads:
right now all the google ads are basically for commercial grid computing/HPC services. This makes, what you might call "textual" sense, given whats on the page (stats for grid-like computing projects), but makes very little "semantic" sense given that our DC projects are not really much like the kinds of things they are advertising, and it also makes little "consumer" sense, by which I mean the people who are looking at their stats most likely don't actually want or need these services. it would seem to me that you might rather advertise PC hardware, games, or other PC enthusiast type stuff, even though there would be no way to tell that directly from your page. Can the google ads be tweaked or changed to advertise that kind of stuff, instead of what AdSense would predict (ie is there any way other than adsense to determine what content your ads get), and if not, it may make more sense to go with another provider for your ads.

make "sense?" :rotfl:

edit: hey, for that matter, here's another revenue idea: do newegg or any of the other popular online sources where we all like to buy hardware have affliliate programs (like amazon.com et al)? i mean, with as much hardware as we buy, if we all used something like that, that might net you a few dollars as well.

I agree,

I'll take a look.

You can't directly manipulate them as shown here (https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=23168)

Only way I could do it there would be to have some paragraph with relevant keywords, but it has to be displayed.

*EDITED* as I might be going against the regulations. I'm not actually supposed to mention the ads.

Bok,
Something I've seen (it may be unique to me) is that the ads seem to rotate through just a few different ones. If I do a page refresh, all of them never change, and sometimes none of them change. Whenever I remember, I do click 'em all, but my memory...:umm:

My adsense account has been suspended without explanation....

From what I've read, it's very unlikely to be reinstated. Thousands of people are having the same problems.

At this point I'm thinking of shutting down completely.

I hope you just speak of adsense Bok. I had a client that also got kicked out of the adsense program... They deserved it though unfortunately... found out later that they were clicking their own links all day.... heh

Have a  and then get the Wii. It's amazingly fun and provides a great outlet to release tension. Just smack 50 or 60 homeruns in batting practice and you'll be on your way. :) (at least it works for me)

Hope you cheer up Mr. Bok. :haddock:

Bok -

My adsense account was suspended as well. Google recently changed their TOS, and made it *much* easier to suspend people...

Bok, I think I speak for pretty much everybody in DC, regardless of team and project affiliations, when I say that we really appreciate the work you put into the stats.
