Wonder why we never were able to make it to /. with our primes, next time (soon hopefully) I am going to be a bit more to write a good submission.

Let's NOT write to them. I clicked on the link, and most of the posts are a cat fight about whether or not 1 is a prime number. It seems that Slashdotters love to argue and insult each other, or at least that's been my experience.

JasonG are you aware of just how many people use /.?

When I have had posts with links to my HP from the name of the poster I earned a bunch of cash from my adsense blocks because of the extra traffic and clicks (sure I don't earn a lot normally and it doesn't take a lot to impress me  )

Yeah there are some pretty lame discussions sometimes, still the the best comments usually get modded up and there are lots of people who only read the posts and follow the links.
Also people who are used to read the discussion on /. learn fast to focus on the threads with meaningful discussion.

I think getting on /. would be a major boost to this project no matter if the discussions turns out to be just as stupid as the one on the twin-primes post. I think we have gotten our hand on most of the math-intelligent people we can get for this project, if we want to get any further we have to appeal to those that discuss meaningless things on /. I guess I am one of these with not much knowledge of the math behind this project still through time I have been contributing a bit here and there. Even you might also find me in mathematical meaningless discussions :hiya:

Anyhow it would be nice to be clear on what to do when the next prime comes along, I sure am for getting all the exposure from that, including posting on /. and everywhere we can get the news in.

Just some numbers for that:
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=01/10/22/1814211&mode=thread
"happen every day for a quarter of a million readers" 5 years ago and growing since.

If 0.01% of /. readership signed up everyday that would 25 more users signed up than yesterday

http://seventeenorbust.com/stats/
New users in the last day 1 users

Then remember the audience - lots of geeks, nerds, sysadmins, computer junkies (and trolls, jerks and undesirables).

ArsTechnica a similar though smaller audience than slashdot. They truly crunch.
As a for instance you can see in the stats and see when ArsTechnica ran a seventeenorbust gauntlet challenge.
Most recently http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/122097561/m/346008761831
Halloween/

Now if you could get slashdot to run an sob challenge :-)
Find a sponsor, get an idiot proof as it can be setup to hit second pass as they will lose interest real quick. You might be suprised at much crunching could be done.

I check slashdot almost daily however if you want an article or a fp post we would really need something like a prime.

If Louie were smart about it next time we find a prime he would give slashdot the scoop before posting on the main site. That might generate more users in one day than the project does in a year.

vjs: well spoken

I think another way to get this project on /. would be to write an article about the project and DC projects in general that somehow is interesting and bring new things out that are good for discussion, things like that have a tendency to make it through to /.

But a new prime would surely help a lot on getting us through anyhow.
