Debian 3.0

While on the openprojects IRC network yesterday, I received the following notice:

-lilo([email protected])- [Global Notice] Congratulations to the Debian folks, who have apparently just released Debian 3.0 within the last couple of hours. Debian have been here on the network since 1997 or so. I've been asked to note that mirror sites can be found on http://www.debianplanet.org/node.php?id=742 !

What's the difference between Debian and Libranet :confused:

I just spent 30 minutes trying to find a link for the .iso and gave up for now. I guess it would be called the 'woody' release...:confused:

Libranet Debian is simply a distribution built around Debian and called Libranet. It's claim to fame is that the installer is significantly enhanced and easier to use and it doesn't include all the software in the world but what it does include is optimzed and setup very well so it works with minimal configuration from the user.

Debian has three levels of code maturity and uses code names.

1. stable - woody is now stable release. potato is now obsolete
2. testing - no new code name yet
3. unstable - sid

Libranet 2.0 uses the 2.4.18 Kernel.

Debian has indeed released 3.0 in stable format. From the Debian website - "At the moment, the 3.0*rev0 CD
images are only available via jigdo. Normal HTTP/FTP downloads will be possible in a few days."

The "jigdo" scheme allows you to pick the fastest out of 300 Debian mirrors worldwide for your download. It features easy mirror selection and "upgrading" of older images to the latest release. Also, it is the only way to download Debian DVD images.

If you have a fast connection, my preferred method of installation is to get the IDE-PCI floppies (root.bin and rescue.bin) that have ethernet in the kernel and do the install over the internet. That way you only have do download what you need.

If you weren't paying attention..... Yes, you can install it from TWO FLOPPIES :thumbs:
