I don't know about you but that is getting into tempting territory.

What's the price like over the pond?

Hi Fozzie..... I would double check with scan that it is an extreme CPU.

and look on ebay.com (USofA) for the better price:cheers:

buying from the US would be good as long as you can avoid the exise duty.

I'm officially tempted. Got about $1k spare to put into a new machine, so quad-core it is. Not straight away as I'll wait until I'm home for a week to build it.

What mobo is recommended for overclocking a QX6600? I'd like to get it up to 3Ghz or so..

Cool. Cheers for that

Corsair Mem it is then. 4Gb XMS2 DDR2 is only $109 at Newegg after rebate..

I should have everything else I need already..

I'm delaying this...one of the ebay sellers I've used regularly has some 22" Viewsonic LCD's I couldn't resist :)

Bought two of them to by my primary desktop display. Will replace the 2 19" viewsonics I have..

Awesome deal by the way. 96 of them available for $200+$45 shipping!

I will be looking to go quad-core sometime this year but first I want to wait and see what AMD has to offer along with the next Intel release.

Intel is slashing the price of the Q6600 to $266 come July 22. That's half its current price.

I recently upgraded to an 3600+ x2 (running 2 F@H clients for Free-DC, of course), so I figured I'd start stopping by a little more often.

I'm doing well. I hope things are going well for you and everyone else here.

Cant wait to see what prices will be like when its time to build again.. probably about january. Should be able to pop up two quad core systems cheaply.

I think you guys shouldn't go for the Intel quad core machine.

Unlike Intel’s Core, Barcelona gives each core dedicated L2 cache, and Barcelona incorporates a redesign that reduces cache latency (access delays). Barcelona adds Level 3 cache, a newcomer to the x86 and a page out of IBM’s POWER playbook. All four CPU cores in a Barcelona socket will share a single master catalog of recently-retrieved data. A three-level cache is a must-have for a multicore CPU, and that becomes obvious when you get a demo that switches L3 on and off.

$266 for Q6600 is just amazing :looney:

Since I already have an i965 board this will be the perfect cruncher :smoking:

64 days until I buy my first quad-core, if I'm patient enough. Otherwise, it'll be an upgraded dual-core.

Fozzie

we'll have to see what benchmarks it will do.

80% increase in FPU efficiency sounds promissing.

Sweet deal. That's a $200 mobo on newegg.

Nice.

Ordered one along with 2Gb OCZ memory and 600W PSU :)

Seems to be basically the new July 22nd prices.. I wonder if it's a mistake somehow..

That would suck. I promised my dad I'd sleep on my decision, and there's no way they would let a mistake like that stick around overnight.

It'll probably arrive on mondaybut I'm travelling to Atlanta for the week, returning on friday night before flying up to NY on saturday afternoon.. I doubt I'll be able to build it until July 5th :swear: :(

But at the same time I'll bring online the dual dualcore IB has just sent me...

Just a quick update.. Looking over my order now it has shipped it has broken down the CPU as $322.

The mobo looks like it is one of the better overclockers too..

All in all I think this is a great deal and it's still going on for anyone on the fence :)

Bok,

Please look at this post (http://www.mersenneforum.org/showpost.php?p=106416&postcount=15).
There's a benchmark for the intel quad-core processor with prime95 v25.2.

Carlos

Negativity...

That's one persons benchmark. Other have shown better scalability and anyway I'll probably never run prime95...

Agree it's only one persons benchmark but prime95 is know as a good bench torture software. Anyway, got the money to buy a new machine and I'll go for the true quad-core from AMD.

I'll probably get one too, no reason not to have both.. I seriously doubt AMD's ability to provide the quad cores in serious numbers before christmas though..

It's a pity..

Yeah Prime95 needs a lot of memory bandwidth so I can see the new AMDs performing better for that. Hopefully in the fall I will be getting something quad-core-ish, just hope AMD releases sooner than later.

Any dual proc mobo's available for this?

Bok
06-26-2007, 07:42 AM
yes, but then you need to use the xeon 53xx series quadcores I believe..and the prices start rising...

Bok

Can you use those in single proc config? If so, can you shoot me some links to appropriate hardware, with prices?

Quad core is running with the Ultra ChillTec cooler installed (this thing is HUGE!!). Running a mild overclock at 2.5Ghz right now and BOINC running 4 instances of Riesel LLR..

Temps are holding steady at 41C under full load :)

Bok

Digital Parasite
07-12-2007, 02:34 PM
Bok, how is the scaling on that with 4 BOINC threads running compared to say just 2 running? You getting anywhere close to 4x the speed over 1 CPU?
