First of all, I have no idea how this client got on my computer, but it's here and I can't get rid of it.
After reading through the about section of this site, sounds pretty interesting what you guys are doing. However, I just want to take this off, and if anyone could help me, that'd be great.
Thanks.
Check your startup menu is it there? Is so delete the icon in your startup.
Another option is checking your installed programs list you may be able to unistall.
Third it may be installed as a service, right click my computer then manage then services then look for something called seventeen or bust then disable apply and reboot.
Finally it may be another program altogether called sb.exe, that is not our program (although the name is the same) that version is actually spyware.
How do you know it's seventeen or bust do you have a small yellow 17 in the lower left corener of your screen???

the only time it appears is at startup, and it has the 17 logo in my taskbar on the lower right. I believe the username is CompSciProj , and i have an ad-aware log that does in fact state the file name is sb.exe , however when i try to delete it, it reads that it cannot read from the source file etc.
EDIT: after looking again, the username is actually 2CompSciPros , along with an invalid team name. I tried doing the service disabling and then restarting, but it came up just the same as always. Also another mistake on my part, the file name is actually sobsvc.exe and apparently it was attached with a file I got off BitTorrent, and upon my attempt to delete that file, again ("Cannot delete sb.exe: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.)
I apologize for the confusion.

Interesting.
"2CompSciPros" is a valid SoB account, crunching for Team Prime Rib (ars technica team).
Makes one wonder how that got delivered in a BitTorrent download...
IIRC quite some time ago another user packaged the SoB client with downloads of some screen savers they had hosted. Going back 4 years or so now though..

Easy same way anything gets delivered via torrent probably a self-exe rar / zip with that in it preset to unpack and run sobsvc.exe - Im sorry but that's illegal Borgage is it not, Bok? Someone maybe should have a word with the Team Captain on that one.

Whoever that is has been removed from the team.
Let me know if you see anything else weird.

Elysium, I'm glad you were able to get your system back the way you want it.
I've noticed, with gratitude, that noone has actually used the cheat word without first getting all the facts. Just that this sounds suspicious and is fraught with potential abuse.
Ars is swift on not accepting cheaters, no doubt about it. I'm guessing since there was no email address in 2CompSciPros's profile, that removing him/them from the team until more could be found out, was a temporary measure - until we knew more - not an accusation of cheating.
We now know a bit more as we have heard from 2CompSciPros regarding what happened from his/their perspective. All that is needed is a clarification from Elysium.
So Elysium, I hope you still here to answer a question...
Was this an opt-in install where you had to click something identified as sobsvc, or did it install because you didn't opt-out and/or it was done without your permission?

Hmm, I thought it might be of help if we were to hear his side first...
This post is in response to the allegations of cheating. I have not cheated in any way. My friend and I installed SOB on every computer we were granted access to, and we decided to write an automatic installation process of the software. In order to attract more people to the site, a very safe and non-intruding installment file was included with a few computer e-books and other files we hosted on the torrent network. This installation file would ONLY be activated if the user decided to install it, by directly clicking on a file named "install sob service" or something similar. In no way is this cheating, as the installation of the software is not automatic, whereby the user MUST initiate the installation. The installation file never started by itself, and had to be done manually. I do not appreciate getting kicked off the team because of the assumptions that I cheated. I have spent countless hours working with SOB, even starting a petition in high school that resulted in the administration allowing me to install the SOB software on any computer in the school district. I took the iniative to boost the project, yet I get rewarded by being branded a cheater. So goodbye Team Prime Rib, thanks for nothing.

Oh dear someone took it badly it would seem they had the best intentions and just wanted to save sometime in deploying it across pc's they had the right to borg - maybe adding it into an e-book torrent wasn't a very good idea or maybe they should have written a "Are you Sure?" part to the "install sob service" to it with a descriptor of what it was....
