Need video conversion software

I have some video files that I (1)want to reduce in size, and (2)want to change to ipod format(probably H.264[did I get that right?] or anything else that can run on an ipod)

I have both a Windows and Linux computer that I could apply to the task, so those are the two OSes that the available programs have to work with, either one or the other, not necessarily both.

What would you guys recommend?

When my mental illness was still a major problem, I could use the search engines like a champ. But, for some reason, the less I have to worry about mental health symptoms, the less confidence I have in my web-searching abilities.

There is I'm sure you have to be semi-insane to actually be able to type in the correct phraseology in order to get the results your wanting and not 10 million unrelated it's that have nothing to do with what your looking for..
