View Full Version : Paying someone to heat their house?

I'm been thinking about the fact that computers double as space heaters when they're on. What if I could convince someone to install a throttling program on their computer? During the time they might be using the computer the cpu is throttled to a level that would cut down on fan noise. But at times when the user is at work or sleeping(assuming they can't hear the fan from where they're sleeping) it could be told to run full blast. I could offer to pay their computer power bill in exchange for crunching and they could think of the lowered heating bill as a bonus.

Good idea, bad idea, needs more thought to implement properly? Needs to be tied to a boulder which will then be thrown in the deep part of a lake?

No, no, no.

Sell them a program to regulate the heating effect, which would, just incidentally, crunch a DC project.

Have THEM (this is the important bit) pay YOU! :smoking:

I've been thinking about something very slightly related to this since I moved house. One room is very cold all the time, so I was thinking of ways that I could direct computer heat straight from the back of the PSUs into the room. In the end, I couldn't think of a way of doing it elegantly, other than putting the computer(s) in the actual room, which isn't feasible. :umm:

It's a shame, because it could double up as a cooling effect on a room if I could redirect computer heat straight outside in the summer.

Hmm you need some kinda ducting or a good heat exchanger :D for that alpha..

If anyone wants to make some buttons that something like,"Heat your house and help with research Too. Ask me how!!!"

I'd be willing to by 2-3 of the buttons. I think we should start planning now, if we're going to do this. Winter's going to be here sooner than we think. (For the Northern Hemisphere, anyway)

We should make a Free-DC web page that explains BOINC(I don't think we should mention non-BOINC stuff unless they're power users, or already into the hobby) and how to use it, as well as(VERY IMPORTANT) how to disconnect if they decide they don't want to participate anymore. Better an unsatisfied past BOINCer than a disgruntled ex-BOINCer.

Oh, and lastly, we need to stress that it's spelled with a C, not a K, though I think there's a Distributed Computing Team for people who like boinking better than BOINCing. (Boink is a slang term for casual sex)

What do you guys and gals think?
