I wanted to upgrade to a Q6600 Intel CPU, so I ran down to Fry's Electronics and picked up the CPU, an ASUS P5K and came home.
DOA, wouldn't post, no fan spin up, nada.
Next day took the P5K board back and found myself scratching my head looking a whole bunch of motherboards with very limited choices for a quality mobo...
Found a motherboard sitting all by itself, and I read on the box ASUS Maximus with X38 chipset (wow, the latest and greatest chipset, well I'll be a monkey's uncle) so I ran for the register so I could take it home to see what it can do.

Turns out, I was very lucky to find one. Seems to be a brand spanking new release. :santa:

Here are some nice looking photos from a website

Went straight to 3GHz with the 2.4GHz Quad core Q6600 :) and saw my temps run right up to 170F with my old trusty Zalman CNPS-7700 Cu, so
I slapped a huge Big Typhoon HSF on it, after I modded it to make it fit, (pics to follow) now the temp is around 120F at 2.66GHz.

Once I fine tune the beast and get it the way I want it, it will become my new game box.

Not sure exactly what I got myself into, but it sure is looking pretty good the more I read. :)

Just letting it break in easy, still testing.
It's faster than my quad xeon Mac Pro in Rieselsieve, especially in Integer!

Q6600
Measured floating point speed 2863.49 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 8962.45 million ops/sec

MacPro
Measured floating point speed 2619.64 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 5687.44 million ops/sec

There are much cheaper mobos for just crunching that can OC these quads.
Fry's has 4GB of Patriot for $99 .
I'm reading all over the net that 3.2GHz and even 3.5GHz is easily reached, with great HSF combos.
