Microsoft delivers 11 patches, 6 critical; Excel flaw left unpatched

Are patches Needed for DC crunchers?
When I Install a OS I turn off updates as a norm. Is this OK?
I do not seem to have run into a problem yet from it

I tend not to update crunchers either.

Turn off all automatic updates on all crunchers.
It is believed that the more the OS is patched, the slower it gets,
especially XP.

Yes I agree with that as I have seen it happen after a update

But I was wondering if it was the right thing to do the way things are today

Thanks for the confirmation

Hi Ironbits --

Re: >It is believed that the more the OS is patched, the slower it gets,

I agree with that, with one exception. When I installed the SP3 beta it greatly speeded (sped? lol) up my xp-home box. What caught my eye was that SP3 supposedly tweaks the dual processor code and allows for greater utilization. At least in my case, that was true.

Cheers,

Larry

Really, Larry? That's damn interesting, if true.

Hmmm. I haven't SP3'd yet. Maybe I'll see if I can test that. Thanks for the tip.

BTW, welcome to the forum! :hiya:

Hi Paratima - thanks for the welcome!

Yes, of course YMMV but this was very well worth the huge file size to upload and install.

That sounds wonderful! :)
But I'll still keep the auto-update feature disabled on crunchers ;)

Just keep them SP1 IB and they WON'T update or not very much just the stupid "protection" thing every month...

Or Just turn off Auto update
And I thought unless you updated to SP2 you could not get any upDate
Or at least in the normal way from MS
