View Full Version : Protein Size differs: 69 vs 69AA

Howard et al.,

I'm finding through dfGUI that the protein size with the auto-update is 69AA. However, if you download at least either of the windows client, and then update the client manually (overwrite) the protein size registers as 69.

They seem to act similar in performance though. Is this a last minute change or something someone forgot to change? Is there a difference between the two?

dfGUI isn't accurate for the protein size. There isn't a real way to pull that info out of the client (that the author of dfGUI has found so far) so he has to sort of use a hack to figure out the protein size.

Also, AA stands for Amino Acid, I believe. It indicates 69 amino acids in the protein. Basically, 69AA = 69 amino acids. Just an abbreviation. Residues/amino acids.

Well, that's true... but still if its the same protein, why would it make a difference?

Actually, if dfGUI shows a protein size then there is a 95% change it is accurate, if it can't figure out the protein size it will just display nothing or ????.

There is no difference between 69 and 69AA, they are one in the same. It would be like someone asking, "How fast were you driving?" and you replying "100" or "100 km/h", they both mean the same because when you say "100" the km/h is implied.

In the dfGUI application it will show up as:
Protein Size: 69
but if you output the benchmark information to benchmark.txt you will see it shows up as:
Protein Size: 69AA

So you are looking in two different spots. I put the AA in the benchmark output so that people would know when looking at benchmark info which may not be posted with any other information relating to distributed computing that we were talking about Amino Acids.

Actually, since I live in the U.S., it would make quite a difference... 100km/h wouldn't likely get the cops attention on the Freeway (that's about 62.5 mph). The other, a 100, which be 100mph, would get you arrested. =)

Contrary to popular belief, the 15 Freeway from California to Las Vegas is not the next AutoBahn...

Ok sorry, I should have said: km/h*

* = where km/h is replaced by your local unit of measurement for speed for those countries still not using the metric system. ;)

Oh come on, you got to admit that a 100mph is a heck of a lot more impressive than 100kph. Besides, If you're doing a 100kph, the big rigs will try to run you over out here on the California freeway system....heh. =)
