Blocking Unwanted Ads and Parasites with a Hosts File

I haven't had good experiences with using the hosts file for blocking ads.

On my network at home it tends cause huge delays and then timeouts rather than speed things up by not loading the ads in the first place.

Adblock Plus has been sufficient for my needs for the last few years.
