Whoops. Taking DC too far, much? You've got to use your common sense and know where to draw the line.

The least he could've done was protein folding instead of SETI. :)

Yeah, that is going a little far, especially all the systems from the school district he had running at home? Crazy...

I am surprised he managed to stay "under the radar" for so long to get to #5 overall..

Well I guess I have no worries as I own and feed all my stuff and do not work in a IT job
Now with that Seti should revoke all his points as he had NO legal control over the results

True but if they do that what do they do with all the "results" he's either verified or submitted and have been verified..

AND how can he be still producing results? Or stated another way, why are projects accepting his results?

It should be pointed out that he has not been convicted of anything. So all we know are the claims from one side of the story.

Rather hard to say he didn't put the seti stuff on the school equipment. Should have known better. Lots of folks out there though in the DC world in his situation that shouldn't really be running any stuff on the corporate systems cause they haven't received "formal" permission from the corporate entities to do run the stuff.

Rather hard too to refute having the school's equipment at his home as they would have gone with the serial numbers from purchasing records to prove ownership, baring his possessing "written" permission to have the equipment, which he didn't have or this whole "theft" issue would be a non-starter.

Having spent years in the corporate IT world, I hope they throw the book at him. There's ton's of honest IT folks out there in the corporate world and no one needs jerks like that around.

Nez had control over many computers.
It is likely that DC software has not been removed from them all yet.

Seti is not going to come out of this un tarnished.
Rightly so in my opinion.

Nez never talked about the considerable firepower at his disposal.
People questioned him on the forums but he remained silent.
Warning bells should have gone off in the Seti admins ears.

A simple whois on the IP addresses his clients were using would have revealed there location.
One email or phone call would have answered the question as to whether or not he was using the machines with the owners permission.

Some will say it's not Seti's job to ensure that conbributers are legit.
I disagree, large contributors should be checked out.
Especially ones so secretive.

Across that school district there are hundreds of computers.
The extra power consumption would be a very considerable cost.
Also the power used by the air conditionong removng the extra heat generated by all those PC's running flat out.

Also he was responsible for purchasing computers, how may times did he overspec them ?
This wouldl also have been an extra financial burden on that school district.

Lawyers for the school district are going to be trying to claw those losses back and who do you think they are going to be gunning for ?
It wont be Nez he doesn't have the money.

The authorities already talked to Berkeley some time ago about it apparently. They have a EULA which already says that it should only be installed on PC's that you have permission for. Whilst I tend to agree that in tis case with so many computers returning results, perhaps the projects should make 'best effort' to determine the legality of said machines, it's only a moral responsibility though.

Of course, who is to say he did not have previous permission anyway ? Some of the comments indicate that and that there is a lot more to this story than that one piece suggests.

I am surprised he managed to stay "under the radar" for so long to get to #5 overall..

Until the GPU Projects came along NEZ was #1 BOINC Combined. So far it's just a He said She said situation with a lot of mumbo jumbo newspaper reporting on the matter so I don't say too much about it. If in the end it is conclusively proven beyond a doubt he didn't have Permission to use the Computers to run BOINC on them then his Credits should be Zeroed out across the Board.

But if it isn't proven beyond a Doubt then his Credits should stand because he didn't do anything more than what a whole lot of other people are doing right now without Permission but just to a much lesser degree so they don't draw near the attention that NEZ did.

Something I have noticed too is that a couple more of the guys ahead of me in the BOINC Combined Ranks have decreased their output considerably too since the NEZ Fiasco broke. Sooooooooooo who knows what was happening or was going on with those 2 too ... ???

Well I can stand and say I Have never worked a project that I did not own and house the PC that worked it:D
I do Not even try to Borg the PC's that I build or repair for my friends and family members:thumbs:

I have the Sales Slips for all the parts to the few Measly Computers I own so I don't need anybody's permission but my own to run the BOINC Projects ... :bar:

I also own all the hardware I use with the exception of one lowly shop computer that I have permission to use. I do run all of them at the shop where I work but that is only because we get free electricity and I pay for the DSL. I've been tempted to hijack a rig or two over the years but two words kept coming to mind. Customer Service.

I was running a mixture of NVIDIA 200 Series cards & ATI 4870's & 4850 X2's but have sold off all the NVIDIA's & the 4850 X2's since the 58xx Series Cards have come out. (The 4850 X2's are a PITA to run, at least trying to run 2 together is anyway) So now I'm running all ATI 4780's & 5850's & 5870's. I haven't got any 5970's yet & I'm not sure I really want any for what they Cost. I really like the 5850's, they do real well, run the coolest and right now are easier to get and cost the least ...

I'm just running 15 Box's with 29 Double Precision ATI Cards in them, 8 4870's - 10 5850's & 11 5870's, I'd like to replace the 4870's with 5850's if the Prices start to drop a little on them. Right now all the Sites are Price Gouging as far as I'm concerned because NVIDIA doesn't have anything to counter with against the ATI 58xx's.

They keep the Garage nice and toasty right now with winter coming on but I'll probably shut some down next summer. I was running all out there last summer & it just got to warm. I had to keep the Garage Door wide open just to keep the Temp's in there around 90c to 95c ... Night time wasn't to bad but during the day it was an oven out there ... :firedevil:

Yup, I was actually running 38 GPU Cores before I sold off the 6 4840 X2' & 3 GTX 295's I had & replaced them with Single Core 58xx Cards. I'm hoping it will cut down on the Electrical Bill some by going to the 58xx's as they use less electricity & are a lot faster to boot.

I had a few Electrical Bills over $1000  & the Wifey was none to happy about it. I wasn't all that thrilled about it myself & knew I had to do something about it if I wanted to keep running @ the Pace I was running at. So like I said I'm hoping the 58xx bring the bill down some & I think they will ...

I'm still real curious as to why Production for Merlyn (The Scottish Boinc Team) & Steffen Grunewald, for Merlin/Morgane has fell off so dramatically since the NEZ Story broke on Dec 1'st in the SETI Forum ... :umm:

I admit since my days of distributed folding ... I have to bite down
hard on something whenever I walk into some of our labs
with hundreds of dual Quad Core systems.. At least (so far) I have
always asked, but it would be so easy not too. If Oracle decides I need to go
I will probably go out in a blaze of glory :firedevil:
