This is a friendly warning, I have a new toy to play with, not saying the exact spec but the chip it's socket AM3 and I'm running 4Gb of DDR3 with it, getting Ubuntu 9.10 to test it, then going to put it live once i get the correct case for it as well I'm not going to put the g/card in just yet.... I just wanna bench it first.

These Phenom Quads are great! I'm running 2 of them. One backed up with an ATI 4850, the other with a NVidia 9600 GSO. Both machines are OCed and rock solid!!!

I've had to slam the breaks on my Quad, aborted all projects, since the Primary Sata HDD is throwing bad sectors and needs replacing - I'm sick of BSOD STOP messages followed by system32\config\.... can't read this file errors and I need to sort the case cooling out big time.

I'm going to assume this is your personal do it all computer. About 6 years ago I got tired of my system sounding like a jet warming up from all the fans to try and keep it cool. I went with liquid cooling and now there is only a single 10cm fan in the case and the power supply fan. It is so quiet that the loudest thing is when the dvd spins up. The CPU temperature never exceeds 36c even with Boinc running. It also warms up the room nicely in the winter. I'll never go back to air cooling for my personal rig and I'm still using the kit I bought way back when. To give you an idea about what you would need look (sorry but it is in German) here (http://www.webshop-innovatek.de/shop/Wasserkuehlung/Komplett-Sets/Sets-mit-SINGLE-Radiator/innovatek-SET-Basic-LC-754-939-940-AM2-AM3.html). I would recommend mounting the radiator outside the case for maximum cooling. Mine mounts right on the 10cm case fan at the back of the case. I've seen kits that have a pump, tank, fan and radiator all in one box that fits in a double 5 1/4 drive bay. I would stay from this system as it releases the heat inside the case.
The other thing I would suggest is to replace your graphics card with one of the newer ones that blow the heat out the back of the case. If you decide on the liquid cooling you can add the GPU into the system too. I would also up the power supply to at least 600w.

Big Red - Yeah it's my Personal Rig.. The GPU is pretty new anyway, Passive Cooling. I have been thinking Liquid Cooling but Hmm never been sure about it. I suppose your right I need to Liquid Cool this sucker but then again
I'm going to return the new drive since it's not freaking showing up...
I just tried it the 500Gb with the 320 and the 500Gb plugged in to the slot the 360 works on.. NOTHING...
Yeah I've seen those kits not fun what's the point in dragging the heat out and then put it back..

The biggest worry most people have with liquid cooling is they are afraid it will leak and destroy thier rig. Most of the better kits come with a special fluid for cooling that does not conduct electricty. Just like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChOe6F1rZKQ) one.

More fans mean more noise and usually leaving the side off the case doesn't help unless you have a table fan blowing cool air in.

Well that should do it just strap a 20X20 Box fan to one side of your Case
and remove the other side for a intake:lmao:

Drill a hole for the cords and then seal it with silicone. You could then name the machine Ice Box.

Go to the drive manufacturers web site and you can download their diagnostic software in an ISO format. Create the CD and boot from it. It will tell you whether your drive is defective or not. It will also test the controller on the MB. A lot of them even allow you to retreive the information needed for an RMA.

Well I didn't hear a single "spin up" attempt you know when the PSU is hitting it's limits your try to do too much at once...
How can I get anything off it, IF the BIOS doesn't pick it up!

Oh boy this is going to be fun.
First try disconnecting the power for all the other drives and see if it spins up.
Next you could try changing the power connection for the drive.
You can try changing the power supply.
You can try resetting the BIOS to factory settings. Usually a jumper located near the battery.
You could try putting it in an external case and see if the system recognises that there is a drive.
If you can it get to recognise the drive but it won't show you the files there is still hope. There is a free program out there called PC Inspector File Recovery that does a great job at recovering your important stuff.
If all else fails and there is something really important on the drive you can use a professional file recovery service but it's expensive.

One thing nobody talked about is if you set the slave master pins on the drive
your BIOS would not even pick up the drive if they are not set right
gopher_yarrowzoo
05-29-2010, 10:22 AM
Well it's a SATA drive so no master slave pins to set, nothing to set at all it's plug in and go.. I did take it back and well he could get it to show up either either in bios or using tools he has which are way better than mine, New drive :) also I got a new PSU is this sucker now bye bye 520w - hello 750w with enough AMPS where I need 'em.. I may still need to change the case but we shall see ;) Now I'm going to let it BOINC a little..

Here's what I use: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811166038
Lots of big, slow, quiet fans. Kind of a pain to assemble so that the fans are pushing/pulling where you want them, but once you get it set... Does the job for me! As always, YMMV.
Check out the reviews, though. The only bad one was about something about rebates, which I never pay attention to, anyway.

I am getting some nice numbers out the Quad when I can although I am now starting to find that 4Gb isn't enough some of these WU's are huge and eat up more than 1Gb of memory so I end up only using 3 cores or if i'm lucky 3 cores + my GPU which is slow but I can't replace it, I'm in save, save, save, save, save mode I need to get me moved to West coast USA..
Where at in the West Coast USA? If you can make it to my house I have some AMD boards W/proc and hard drives for you.
