View Full Version : Caching completed units isn't clever!

Seems that whenever there is a changeover, some people dump weeks' worth of production and then get the new client. The changeover happens once there are 10 billion units but these dumpers are effectively delaying that changeover from happening! If everyone uploaded each day, we'd reach that 10 billion threshold more quickly and get on to the next protein earlier!
C'mon people! Don't horde your completed units, send them in promptly!

I agree that if you have an "always on" connection, you shouldn't generally do dumps, however I know of several people that have no other choice.
Besides, are we in such a hurry that it matter that much whether the update happens this week or the week before?

Maybe you should ask Howard that! Howard?

Some people don't have access to the machines, so they wait until the time of the dump to do it.
If it means not running the machines at all, I don't think changing things is worth it.
In my situation, if I couldn't dump before a changeover or right afterwards, I would stop running the client the Friday before. This would result in the same amount of immediate contribution by me, but a lot less total contribution.

Halo,
How about you stop by each and every day and harvest from my systems that don't have internet access? That way I won't be "hording" completed units and you will have one less thing to bitch about.
Better yet, stop by and talk our CIO into allowing internet access to these servers (which they absolutely don't need for their intended/real purpose). I am sure she will do that just to please you.
God knows I would harvest everyday just to please you, but I have this "job thing" that I place at a higher priority than your happiness...I am weird that way...

If it mattered, one could estimate fairly accuratly how many last minute units would come in, and plan the switchover date accordingly. This would be a far better solution than asking hundreds of people to do more work to get units in sooner (and probably driving many people away from DF in the process).
I get the feeling that the optimum number of structures per protein is arguable. One could do 5G and have poorer data on twice the number of proteins, or 20G and have better data on half as many proteins. Who knows which tradoff is best overall?

ANYONE who does have always on internet access should not dump at the end of the current protien. It just slows down it for everyone else. Yeah, it might just increase your daily production, but you are causing problems for everyone else.
