Ive got a overclocked system, i can run seti, sisoft burn in, 3dmark 2003 for hours on end, however if i run DF it crashes after about 10 mins :/ if i lower the clock speed by about 100mhz its fine, any ideas why?

DF is more sensative to instability than most other programs out there. It is extremely vulnerable to slightly bad ram, when you stress the ram by altering the FSB of your cpu when overclocking, it can lead to the ram producing occasional errors which are enough to cause the DF client to crash.

Hmm clocked the chip back by 100mhz and still crashing, only at 150 fsb, other pc is at 170 and running fine, RAM is Corsair PC3200 so there shouldnt be a prob there, Maybe i should reinstall the client :(

Try running memtest86 awhile.
http://www.memtest86.com/
Memtest86 tests both the memory and the connection between the memory and the processor. I always use it on any new computer or cluster node before I try running anything that matters.

You could also try the GIMPS client's torture test: http://mersenne.org/

You can also try superpi. It's pretty good for testing whether a CPU is stable or not... http://www16.big.or.jp/~bunnywk/superpi.html

Clocked it down to default, clocked the mem to 333 (default) and the timings to the most relaxed, disabled hyperthreading nad basicly set all to default and still crashing :( Super pi works fine btw, DF is the only thing crashing

Can you give any info on the 'crash'. What makes you think it crashed - do you get a message? What is it? And when does it crash - always the same place? Random? predictable?

Your DF install may have gotten corrupted. You might try a fresh install to a clean directory. (Overclocking the FSB usually means overclocking the PCI as well, which can cause problems with the hard disk controler, which can corrupt files written to disk.)

Ok, that is definitely a crash. Can you open a DOS prompt on your machine and type 'echo %TEMP%' and tell me what you get?
Also, have you tried /can you try the new beta and tell me if that one crashes in the same way for you? If it does, I can send you a DEBUG version of the beta to hopefully pinpoint why it is crashing (apparently only on your machine).

just to clarify, i think howard is talking about a %TEMP% environment variable rather than cpu temperature. this should work since you are running XP
