Hi,
how do I find out if it is a 6-diff stub and what is it?
yoyo
When it shows your computer working on the stub, for each stub there will be a bunch of numbers with dashes between them and a slash in the middle of it all. Count the numbers between the dashes to the left of the slash, the ones that stay the same for each workunit. A 5-stub has 5 numbers, a 6-stub has 6, an x-stub has x, x being a number.

Hi,

yoyo

When you look in the dnetc.log file, you'll find a number after "Loaded" and "Completed". That number tells you what stub you are working on. The number of numbers after the "25/" tells you what kind of stub you have.
Here are some examples:
6-diffs stub: 25/21-4-42-9-8-10
5-diffs stub: 25/12-19-11-13-1

This FAQ explains a little more about the stubs:
http://faq.distributed.net/cache/230.html

Hope this helps!

Jeff

Probably not any more massive than their current RC5 challenge though... At least doing OGR-26 *might* lead to some useful data one day.

the-mk
11-03-2007, 01:41 AM
I think it would take very long until the project ends, like rc5-72, which currently needs > 500,000 days (is more than 1,000 years)!

wirthi
11-03-2007, 05:35 AM
Also note that OGR has at least some scientific value, while for RC5 we just crack one randomly chosen encrypted message, what is quite useless from a scientific point of view.

A few calculations show that there are currently:

No. days to end of the year: 54
Current gap to AnandTech 10635: 60,489,509
Assuming their rate of 86,000 remains constant (and it doesn't look that way, their last two days-worth of output was far about average. Maybe they're onto us?),
we'd need an average daily output of 1,194,380, which is currently 721,060. Which is a 66% increase in output.

Hmmm....

I was not able to do anything with the boinc_5.10.17_powerpc-unknown-linux.sh file :( - it failed extraction with directory not found or something.
I believe I asked for you to make it into just a tar file so I could just extract it where I wanted, because I looked at the file and saw some embedded script stuff at the beginning, which is what I think was causing the failure.

Because of your instructions I was able to get SIMAP working on all PS3s, at a cost of about 1 hours worth of work on OGR per PS3.
Thanks! :)

IronBits, have you updated any of your PS3's to the 2.10 System Software level? I've done it on two units, and as soon as I try to reboot the whole thing turns into a brick. No video, no USB, no nothing.

IronBits
01-19-2008, 12:40 AM
Really? I haven't touched my oldest units from the original batch.
These last two I just took out of the box, received the PS3 updates via network, just like I did the others, and prior to sticking YDL on them.
I do the Sony update, then format it giving 10gb to other OS, stick YDL DVD in drive and tell it to install other OS, then make the Other OS the default, then it reboots and away I go.
I haven't had a problem yet. Perhaps the order in which it's done?
I won't know about performance for another couple of days of full runs to compare them to the other units.

I don't plan on letting Sony touch the older ones, so thanks for the heads up and sorry to hear about your troubles. :(

I've been still using the v1.5 CELL-Linux-CL_20071023-ADDON, and it seems like that may be the problem. From the CHANGES-e.txt that comes with v1.5.1 CELL-Linux-CL_20071220-ADDON.

v1.5.1 (2007/12/20 version)
Linux Kernel 2.6.23
o Following problems are fixed
- As of PS3 firmware version 2.10, the GPU command buffer size must be at least 2
MiB large. Then we can not see the video output on the display.

I was so disgusted when everything immediately went black with this replacement unit that I just turned everything off and put it back in the box. I'm *hoping* that I'll be able to get it to boot back to SonyOS so I can re-install the new otheros. At least I was smart enough this time to immediately pull the 40gb drive so if it does ever have to go back I won't lose the install.

IronBits
01-19-2008, 08:32 AM
Dang shame you're having all those problems. If it turns on, you should be able to get to it via SSH and hopefully fix the Addon software issue ;)
Once I have the default YDL linux installed, I shut it down and move it to the 'rack', never to have anything but a power cord and nic cable. :)

BlisteringSheep

My current estimation - based on data gathered since May 2007 - is somewhere mid-August 2008. The-MK uses the same algorithms as I do but has a different starting point of his data so he usually predicts one or two months later.

In fact one cannot really predict the end date with confidence. While the project's speed is quite constant at around 300 Gnodes/sec, the "percentage completed" is not. This is due to the old "one does not know how many nodes there are in a stub"-Problem. And stubs is what counts for the "percentage completed"-value.

:: 03-Feb-2008 21:54 GMT (Sunday) ::

Dear friends,

We are coming towards the final stages of the OGR-25 project.
Our network has come under some strain in recent days, due to
the amount of OGR work being processed. We are aware that
some of the stubs being issued are very small. This is making
calculating buffer requirements difficult for those of us who
like to keep a close eye on things.

In the default configuration, an instance of dnetc which
cannot receive OGR stubs to work on will switch over
seamlessly to the RC5-72 project. We recommend to leave this
behaviour in place, if only to ease the load on our network
at this busy time.

If you have disabled the RC5-72 project in your client
configuration, your client may sit idle for a time while we
continue to experience difficulties with network connections.

We expect that the network connection difficulties will
continue into Monday, as this is historically the busiest
day of the week for our system. Please bear with us as we
work to resolve the shortages. We thank you for your
support.

Moo! ]:8)

Good thing we run our own pproxy servers ;) plus Bok's, which gives us an additional level of buffering.

yoyo

As we reach the end stages, we are seeing a lot more fluctuation in stub sizes, even day to day. It used to be that there would be long stretches between the longest stubs and the shortest stubs, but I'm now seeing this every almost week. It's a big PITA for us offline crunchers to keep the right amount cached.

alpha
02-19-2008, 01:14 PM
Actually, they were stubs buffered from back in September 2007, so it isn't a reflection of current stub distribution. However, as BlisteringSheep said, stub size is expecting to fluctuate all over the place.

Apparently (http://faq.distributed.net/cache/230.html), we have now begun the 4-diff and 3-diff stubs, so some uber-massive ones might show up for some people...

IB you will love what I am doing I Built two new Towers That will hold 160 Ghz each That means I can have 480 + Ghz for you to play with I will post a pic or vid soon

And yes Digital Parasite I will put a huge tarp over top of everything for the days it will be down

You will see a drop in my output for today and tomorrow
As I am re-organize-ing My computer room
I should be back to full burn by tomorrow night

I should be back to or close to my norm output Now
But One of my Quads did not like the move and Quit

I'm not quite ready to get a Pic of the whole layout yet
But here is a shot of 2 towers and there will be 2 more to come
The third tower is just out of sight
Each tower holds 14 Nodes there are 20' fans behind the towers to draw
Fresh air through the towers And there is even a elevator for me to get up and down from there but you can not see it in this pic
But it will soon be up in my BLOG:thumbs:

Yes it will be when it is done
But there is one problem
With all the nods running it produces a vary Strong RF signal that can over whelm a AM radio at 60 feet with noise
Is there a way to shield or contain the RF signal

:rotfl: Good one Beyond.

You need EMI shielding paint. Basically paint with metals in it.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=lang_en&suggon=0&as_qdr=all&q=+%22emi+shielding+%22+paint&btnG=Search

Line the walls/floors/ceilings with a grounded wire mess, might help.
