View Full Version : Linux help needed
Hi peeps,
I recently installed Debian woody on my old notebook (CPQ presario 1207 = 100Mhz, 16MB Ram, 1,2GB hdd).
I need to 'clean-up' system a little, it's taking too much space.
Any general rule for removing files?
(meaning: I can uninstall them via aptitude, but there's still much junk all around da place...)
Thanks for help.

what sort of "junk" are you talking about, and what are you doing with the laptop? debian is pretty good about being small but i guess 1,2G is a bit of a crunch if you want all the GUI goodness too.
one thing to note - dpkg has a --purge (i think) option to clear out any config and other related files of things you uninstall, if any. not sure if that helps you much though.
Junk = bind, iptables and such...
found some info'bout it yesterday.
dpkg --purge -> thanks.

one other thing if apt-get remove isnt enough for you, there is a simple program called tasksel (that usually gets run during install) that provides a very coarse-grained selection of packages. if you find something installed there that you dont need, it could free up a fair bit of space. the other menu-driven system is dselect, but it scares me :scared:
dselect too...:scared: (surfing through it...)
