How do I set this to run as a service? I really do not know how to do this but I know it is possable to do from looking at the GUI set up screen. If I do this that would get rid of the window right?

It's in the readme1st.txt file. ;)
But in short, you execute something like "foldtrajlite /install", or something. I'm not sure on the exact syntax, though, as it's been a while since I did that. Check the readme1st.txt for the authoritative answer.

I assume that what you mean by GUI is dfGUI for Windows, as that has a check box for if the client is being run as a service.
You can only run as a service in NT/2000/XP
Open up a command window. (go to Start, choose Run and then type cmd).
Drag the distribfold folder to the command window. This will enter something like this on the line:
"C:\Program Files\distribfold"
Remove the C: and add cd to front:
cd "\Program Files\distribfold"
and hit return.
Now type in:
foldtrajlite /install
This will install it as a service that will automatically run when the computer start up, you do not even have to be logged on.
If you want to run with extra RAM, you have to edit the service.cfg file that is now in the distribfold directory. Add the line:
useram=1
To start up the service without rebooting, right click on My Computer and select Manage. When that opens go to Services. Find the one that says Distributed Folding and start it.

does it run any faster as a service or will the difference be minimal compared to using dfGUI.
Also, will it still only use the unused processor cycles , or will it be like a program constantly working in the background (and therefore slowing down the machine)?
Just curious...

dfGUI is just a monitoring program. It will work if you have the client set up as regular program OR if you have it set up as a service.
You get a couple of advantages when set up as a service, one being that it automatically starts for you when your machine boots up, and gracefully shuts down when you shut down your machine. Another is that since it doesn't display the drawing of the structure on the screen, you might get a very small speedup from the service not doing that. But you can configure the command line client not to draw to the screen (quiet mode) as well.
Once you have it up and running as a service, you can use dfGUI to monitor its status. If you want to control the service and configure the options using dfGUI, open the config window and make sure you click on "Client Installed as Service" so it knows how to handle it.
By default both the Client and the Service are set to use the lowest priority so they will only use the CPU cycles that would have otherwise gone to waste.

thanks for the info guys. Now all I need is a way to alert me to crashes. I am running 7 machines here at home but I only have a 4 port KVM. switching cables is a pain in the but to do when you are just going to check in to see if it's running. Also I want to install this on the 6 machines at work as well as the machines I have at home. the only problem is the fact that I cannot run around and look over everyone's shouolder top make sure she is up and runningall the time there as well. So I would like to be able to access those from one monitoring machine as well

Drowis, if your computers are networked you can share the directory where your DF clients are installed and monitor all the clients by using this DCMonitor program:
http://www.bluetentacle.co.uk/dcmonitor/
That will let you track all of them from one machine so you don't have to keep messing with your kvm switch or bugging people at work.

Does it support the new Beta client?
LOL!
Reminds me of how I wanted to do a GUI installer for DF as a service, etc.
Did the GUI one afternoon, but haven't gotten round to the back-end; here's the pic (http://t2.technion.ac.il/~sm0ti/dfWinService.jpg)
