My client crashed overnight and now all I can get is:

[NULL_caption] FATAL ERROR: [002.003] Unable to read trajectory distribution, please create a new one
Hit Return

Anyone any ideas how to fix it (without losing my work)? I am running XP and the text client and I have no idea how to create a new trajectory distribution.

Thanks,
SFS

I saw that once. Deleted the filelist.txt file and it took right off.

I backed up my folding directory and tried that, but it started at gen 0 again. Is there anyway I can start from where it left off? If not I guess I will do this and start again. Thanks.

I'm having the same problem on my Windows XP box, df running as a service, dfgui 3.0 was also running.

From my logs:

========================[ Jun 18, 2003 6:25 PM ]========================
FATAL ERROR: [099.099] {trajtools.c, line 3585} Cannot write database file C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\43890_5644.dbf to disk

ERROR: [001.001] {trajtools.c, line 3480} Unable to open trajectory distribution file 8geejxka_protein_21.trj
FATAL ERROR: [002.003] {foldtrajlite2.c, line 4700} Unable to read trajectory distribution, please create a new one

There is plenty of hard drive space, so I don't understand the write failure message, and included it just in case it is relevant.

Thanks!

running as a service seems to have many problems...
So I just stick with Jeff's DFGui, run it in quiet mode, and down in the ICON tray where I can keep an eye on it ;)
XP, mostly w2k and a few win98 boxen

This could be a bug.. I will see if anyone else reports similar problems to be sure though. As for the error writing to TEMP, any idea why? Permissions perhaps??

QIbHom
06-19-2003, 12:58 PM
The write error only showed up once,. This is Windows XP, so it isn't secure, or anything. Anything can write to temp. There is plenty of disk space.

I doubt it is related, but since it was the last thing in the logs before the other error, I included it.

Latest set of error messages is:

ERROR: [000.000] {ncbi_socket.c, line 1258} [SOCK::s_Connect] Failed pending connect to www.distributedfolding.org:80 (Unknown) {errno=No such file or directory}
ERROR: [000.000] {ncbi_connutil.c, line 801} [URL_Connect] Socket connect to www.distributedfolding.org:80 failed: Unknown
ERROR: [001.001] {trajtools.c, line 3480} Unable to open trajectory distribution file 8geejxka_protein_21.trj
FATAL ERROR: [002.003] {foldtrajlite2.c, line 4700} Unable to read trajectory distribution, please create a new one

*shrug* I'm on a T1 here, no other connection problems. I can ping distributedfolding.org and connect to the website.

Thanks.

well it crashed again, and I got the exact same error when I tried to start it again. If I delete the filelist.txt it will run again, but starts from gen 0. It looks like it was not a one off...

Same here, small furry spider. I just keep deleting filelist.txt, and loosing the data.

At least my linux boxen are happy.

I don't seem to be able to get past mid 30s generation without this happening. It happens whether or not I use dfGUI, quiet or not. I am running the extra memory switch but I have 512MB.
My machine is a PIII 933 running XP home. (my windows 2000 P4 has no problems)

If anyone else has this problem, please post so we are not alone :)

Can you provide a screenshot of what it looks like when it crashes? Failing that, can you tell me EXACTLY what it is doing when it crashes - minimizaing energy, creating trajectory distribution, or building structures?

small_furry_spider
06-20-2003, 06:14 PM
OK, I will get you a screenshot, I just need to wait for it to crash again. I copied the whole directory the first time it did it, so I could provide you with any of the files if you want.
Thanks.

ok, I got one. It stoppred responding at a much lower generation this time.

When I restart it I get exact the same error as I describe before.
Thanks for your help.

I got something that looked a little different. No MS error, just a df error. When I get back to work Tues., I'll get a screenshot.

Thanks.

Ok, I understand now. So the real problem is not the error message, but rather that the cleint is crashing at this point. If it crashes at exactly this point, the error you are getting follows as a side effect.

I have no idea why it is crashing on your machine however, as the program should be very stable. Please send a 'dir' of the files in the directory at the time of the crash (post in this thread is fine). There is no need to see the actual files except perhaps progress.txt and filelist.txt (if they are present). Something funny is causing this crash.

Is there anything 'unusual' about your machine or Windows installation we should know, any non-default? Also what is your CPU and version of Windows? Thanks.

PIII 933
512MB RAM
20GB windows partition (over 1GB free)
10Mbit internet connection (connected through a router)
running winXP home (version 2002)
I have AV software (sophos) and firewall (zone alarm) running
I am logged in as administrator

The only non-standard thing is that my graphics card is running on an 89MHz AGP bus (sapphire radeon 8500LE 128MB) due to a processor upgrade a couple of years ago from a celeron 300, but I have not had any problems with this so far.

If you want any other files, or want me to do any particular tests, please let me know.

I have the trajectory error on one of mine gen 246, 46 gen buffered. Win2k pro 1600MP dually running two instances with GUI. Not a sevvice install. The other client had a previous gen missing error but is still running. I use dialup. error log is 558kb in size after 3 days. EDIT both clients have the previous gen missing error.

I've had this a couple of times now, I've only been folding phase 2 for less than two days using the screen saver on XP.

It gets to a stage where it is supposed to be looking for alternatives but it just stops (for unknown reasons) when I try to exit it, it is unresponsive to movement of the mouse.

When it try to start again it gets all upset and won't.

For this error:

[NULL_caption] FATAL ERROR: [002.003] Unable to read trajectory distribution, please create a new one
Hit Return

Hit enter to close client, rename the *.trj file to the previous generation as follows:

xxxxxxxx_protein_10.trj to xxxxxxxx_protein_9.trj

Restart the client, it'll then regenerate the "Generation Trajectory Distribution", and continue where it left off without losing your place in generations, or having to start from 0 generation, definately a client bug.

Thanks dgr, that lets me carry on folding. Now I just need to wait for a proper fix.

I just got the same thing.
How I got it:

Stop client by deleting lock file.

Rerun client.
It tries to upload, but times out after a few mins.
It waits the 5 seconds for you to change your username.

Then

[foldtrajlite] FATAL ERROR: [002.003] Unable to read trajectory distribution, please create a new one
Hit Return

Now, if I'm supposed to delete my filelist.txt, that's 65 generations lost.
BTW, I tried dgr's method, it still gave the same error.

I ran into it again, a little different this time I had to rename it to the current generation. It worked also, I thought the BETA phase was over???

For future reference, how do I find out the current generation (other then the progress.txt file)?

For now, I gave up and deleted the 66 or so buffered generations.

:jester: har har, yes, well apparently beta testing didn't find all the bugs. As soon as we can reproduce this problem it will be fixed.

In the mean time I have given up on running as service on my XP/w2k boxen. Back to running with DfGui no quite mode and dos box visable. At least you can see whats happening. Don't seem to have any more problems.... knock on wood.....

:p

I was just being sarcastic, anyway the biggest problems I've seen is the error listed here, which I figured how to keep things upto pace and no lost work, however the second bigest one I see is the "missing previous generation" one, can you at least accept what results are there, it's bad enough we'll have to bite the bullet and start fresh because you cannot edit the filelist.txt without producing a 000.000 error (which BTW is a good way to ensure no dups or cheating), but at least credit the work done upto that point, what would be better is to accept it and let us continue with the next generation, but that would be asking too much! :rotfl:

I'm also running the DOS client version with no problems. I just noticed that nobody seems to be having problems with the DOS client.

I believe that people posting these problems run the CLI.

2 of my 3 DF boxen have now run into client errors.

The first hit the "prev gen missing" error yesterday, after 5 days of errorless operation. (nothing but connect failures in the log). It seems to have uploaded properly since, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Now today one of my Athlon boxes gives the prev gen error AND the trajectory error. None of these boxen are running as a service (all running DFgui 3.01 and txt-cli under Win2k)

So far my overclocked machine is the only one to not fail.

I'm going to upgrade to DFgui 3.1, since my problems have all been noticed while running the monitoring prog. Plus I will try some of the .trj renamings suggested above, but failing that I will try the sneakernet info since I am not about to lose 148 generations without a bit of a fight. :trash:

I'm happy to post exact error log text, but it seems to fit exactly with those who posted before me.

I too was having this problem. After reading many of the messages on the boards and this thread I was able to fix mine. What I did was to delete all *but* the first two entries in filelist.txt and the folding was able to restart with only losing the information on the current generation.
Good luck folding everyone!

OK, that didn't work quite as well as planned. An error message is generated each time the screensaver starts - Previous generation missing. I now have 33 generations buffered and they will not upload. Bummer :swear: , I say again Bummer :swear:
Oh well, it's still cool watching the proteins being put together.

Happy folding!
