View Full Version : Your paranoia?

When it comes to the work that my machines have done when I'm caching Ièm paranoid about getting credit for each work unit that I do.

How paranoid and what steps do you go to to keep all your data safe from either Hard Drive problems on your end to problems with the client etc ...

I have a my Server machine (Win2K Server) run a Scheduled Task once a day at 2am and backs up every network machine (All directories for DF are shared as well as the other DC Projects) to it`s C:\ director, then at 3am (when I'm pretty sure that even if it ran into a hiccup somewhere it'd be done by then) then on the CD-RW Drive on that machine there is a Disc (Re-Writeable) that the data gets written to (After the previous nights gets erased).

That way if something does happen I'm losing at most 24 hours worth of data instead of possibly a weeks worth or more (Or in the case when I was doing Genome at one time a few months worth! :scared:

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention it helps in cases like this new DF client where some people have had the client die after a certain generation ....

why not just send it to howard/DF ?

i.e. if you are talking about connected boxen, it sends it back to the server every hour or so

if you are talking about disconnected/non-Internet connected PC's, then make sure you don't wait too long, or you may run into the 337 generation bug -> linked (http://www.free-dc.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3452)

i recommend sending every day if possible from disconnected pc's or at least 2 times a week to avoid data loss and the 337 bug

I've gotta' agree with the FoBoT on this question. Don't archive results; they can do you no good. Upload them and they can't be lost from your system. (I'm fairly confident that Howard has good backups going on his side.)

Frequent uploads are my recommended treatment for loss-of-stats paranoia.

Frequent VERY LARGE uploads in djp's case.....:D

I upload frequently also, but it is a good idea to backup the DF folder before you upload.
