I've been impressed with the information that's been released on the new Apple G5s so far (though I suspect much of the hype is overblown somewhat). Unfortunately, I'm not sure I could bring myself to actually buy an Apple. It's kind of sad, really, because I grew up using them.

Nowdays, I feel such an intense dislike for Steve Jobs & his hype machine, and the legions of rabid fanatics that regurgitate his every word, that it would take a seriously superior machine to really woo me over. I think Mac OS X is the best operating system Apple's ever had. I think it's better than Windows XP in some respects. Hell, for a non-techie kind of user, it's undoubtedly better than GNU/Linux. It's not, however, better in any way, shape, or form, for me. So that just leaves the hardware to stand on it's own.

Their prices have always been another sore spot. They just cost too damned much. The new G5s are priced pretty reasonably, but they're still not cheap.

When I got down to really thinking about it, I was mostly just impressed with the IBM processor running inside the new G5s. The case is cool looking, but not that important to me. Everything else is stuff I could get on any platform. I decided that what I really wanted was a machine with that fantastic new processor. I hated the thought that I'd have to buy an Apple if I wanted one.

Until now: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,1197450,00.asp

We'll have to see how these are priced & configured if/when they actually start shipping, but I have to admit, I'm pretty excited about them now!

I have visions of one of these quad-PC970 machines running Gentoo sitting on my desk.

A base configuration of the 4U is expected to cost less than $3,500, sources said.
Not bad! :)
