What's the deal with the new client do you just download if and start from scratch again or does it interactively upadte your current client and continue from where you got to?

Fozzie, it's supposed to auto-update without your intervention. However, this new version of the client apparently has some problems. You can try deleting the entire old client and reinstalling this one from scratch. That has allowed the Windows clients to run (rather than crash), but they are extremely slow.
My Linux clients, however, appear to be behaving normally (speed-wise). If you're using Linux, you auto-update should have worked correctly.

I'm a bit of a Linux noob but have a machine with Redhat 7 on I'll try and use that for now.
Should I keep running the old client as it is not on a internet connected machine and then update as and when the new client has been "fixed"
Or do I just go with the new client?

The results from the old client are only valid (statswise) for 48 hours after the changeover.
I've updated (and uploaded) the old client and until I know what's going on I'll be running ECC2 and/or OGR
