How does this compare to the US ?

This is the standard rate in southern England
Standard Domestic Tariff
Charge per kWh Exc VAT Inc VAT

Band A 10.05p 10.55p
Band B 5.87p 6.16p


Band A is the rate charged for the first 182 kWh per Quarter or pro rata for the number of days covered by the bill (to the nearest whole kWh). This normally equates to the first 2 units every day over the period covered by the bill.

Band B the rate charged for each further kWh supplied during such period.


A Unit of electricity is one kilowatt hour(kWh).


1p = 1.593c

VAT is value added tax.

those of use who get our power from TVA (the Tennessee Valley Authority) get power relatively cheaply. right here, (http://electric.cookeville-tn.org/RetailRates.htm) we pay 6.032 cents for the first 800kWh of the month, and 5.564 cents per kWh thereafter, excluding tax .

of course TVA's rates are about to hike by about 7 percent, but that's the first rate hike in more than 10 years, so still not too shabby.

for reference, 10.05p = 16.1413c and 5.87p = 9.43c

also 6.032c = 3.76p and 5.564c = 3.46p

Here is the breakdown of the cost of electricity from one of the most expensive electricity states in America. (Thanks Enron! :moon: )

What this means is that anything above 286.5 KwH will be billed at $0.13!

My current electricity bill for a small 2 bedroom apartment with 4 computers and 2 laptop (24/7), fridge, microwave, television, electric stove and lights stands at USD 102 dollars as of last month!

Isn't it expensive.

Here on Florida's Gulf Coast, I pay (US$):

$0.075 / KWH for the 1st 1,000 KWH and
$0.085 / KWH thereafter

plus some creatively-named add-on taxes of course. :rolleyes:

So at my current average of around 60 KWH/day, I'm paying about $5.35 /day for juice.
This is for a two-story house, full A/C, etc.

For me up near Limerick Nuclear, PA, I've got this

$0.065 for the first 750KWh
$0.055 every KWh thereafter

Never seen a bill over $110. With 5 computers, Central Air, and all the goodies

Well before I draw a single KWH there is a $4.50 charge. After that I pay $.105 per KWH. This past month my 1 bedroom 425 square foot apartment used 1156 KWH's of electricty.

Not certain about the details, but I also have central Air, and 11 computers, in about 1600SqFt of house. Average electricity cost per day is (about) $6.00 Average monthly bill is $175. (But ask me what my natural gas heating bill is from October through May......)

Jebus, you guys have high bills. With 4 desktops, 8 older laptops (LAN parties are much easier now), air when it breaks 90, and all of the usual stuffs, my bill for july was $106. Only month of the year that breaks $100.

Not as bad as your rates but enough to impact a fixed income person like myself.

Well, that was with about 2 weeks solid A/C, so I'll let er run another month and see what happens.
It hasn't hit the all time high of $500 per month I paid last year, for about 1/2 the GHz I had back then ;)
