Last week, about the same time as the Free-DC server had problems, I lost several other motherboards. I'm still not sure what exactly caused this. I suppose it could have been lightning (we've had a bunch of it lately), or maybe it was just their time to pass. ;)
At any rate, you may have noticed that I haven't been around much since then. It's not for lack of interest, but rather because of an idiosyncracy of mine. One of the boxes that died was my development box, also known as 'the box at my desk that I always use'. Now, I've got several other boxes that are more than serviceable. In fact, I've got a whole room full of machines dedicated specifically to gaming, both for me and my friends. I suppose I could have used one of those machines to spend some time with you guys, but it just wouldn't have been the same. It's this thing I have...anytime my main box isn't in top form, my whole life is askew. I simply don't want to do anything until it's fixed.
I ordered a new motherboard for it last week, but it didn't show up until today. I'd originally ordered a Gigabyte GA-7NNXP (http://www.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/Products/Products_Spec_GA-7NNXP.htm), but it showed up DOA. Since I'd just lost two other Gigabyte boards here at the house, I decided to try another manufacturer for a change. I just wasn't feeling very smurfy about Gigabyte at the time.
This turned out to be a good thing. I looked for another nForce 2 Ultra board and I found the DFI Lan Party NFII Ultra (http://www.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_product_spec_details_r_us.jsp?PRODUCT_ID=1524&CATEGORY_TYPE=null). It was almost $20 cheaper, and I LOVE IT. It came with a bundle of stuff (front control panel, rounded cables, PC carrying strap) and it's even black (and UV glowing green). Of course, all that's neither here nor there if the board doesn't work well, but so far it's doing a fantastic job. I've already benchmarked it against the Gigabyte that I had in there, and it's outperformed it in every test I could think of. :D
So, I'm once again working away on my trusty devel box and all is square and level within my world. I'll see about posting some news to the front page tonight, just as soon as I finish replacing a couple of other motherboards (I ordered several new ones along with several new Antec power supplies). After that I'll play some Battlefield with the guys and then I'll turn my attention to the OS benchmarking stuff I was working on before this all started.
