Hey Data (and Howard!),

If you have an IRC client, drop by irc.free-dc.org:6667. If you don't you can use a web-based client by going to this page (http://www.free-dc.org/chat/).

Crabbleboys was in earlier on the Java client and said it worked fine for him.

Hi ppl
was not quick enough to catch him my apologies

but if we can come up with some proposition that we would like to put to Howard i have no probs in acting as the go between as like yourselves i want this project to succeed - IMHO it has great future potential once we can get the server issue resolved

i spent quite a bit of time yesterday speaking to Howard by email and to all accounts and purposes he is a very genuine dedicated individual and this has earned him my respect and to this end i am prepared to chip in £ sterling towards getting them a server that will do the job that we all love doing -- crunching for the potential benefits to the human race

ideas and suggestion now wanted - but be it known no one is under any pressure - everyone has circumstances and commitments

and i think my guardian angel followed me here so hands off she mine  :D :D

Suggestions for fixing some of the issues we are seeing right now will require a little more information on precisely what kind of setup they are using right now. Do you think he'd be willing to provide people outside of the project group with this information?

Ideally, I'd like to know:

1) Any details about the hardware and OS he's using.

2) How many concurrent connections he's seeing.

3) What kind of process is he using to handle those connections? If he's under Linux (which I'm guessing from previous comments) is he running a standalone daemon or is launching from inetd or some other super-server?

4) Is network bandwidth a problem?

5) Could the upload process be distributed across multiple systems? How about using remote proxies to his server.

6) Is he using/has he considered data compression?

We need to nail down exactly where the bottleneck is (and where future ones may be) before we can figure out what steps might be available to fix it.

Obviously, a bigger nastier server would help. However, there may also be other things that we can do to make the process go a little smoother.

The data is already compressed. bz2 files are a compressed format.

Yeah, I've done quite a bit of snooping since I originally posted that.

In fact, I think I know where the problem is now...
