View Full Version : We've Misplaced Our Fozzie

Yes, it's true...somebody's left Fozzie over at the 'muppets' team. Now, while that seems like a perfectly reasonable place for Fozzie to be (he is, afterall, a muppet), I for one like him better over here!
So...whoever forgot to give him a ride home after what was surely just a visit, please fess up and go get him. :D
We hate to see you gone Fozzie. You were an entertaining addition to the team and it doesn't seem the same without you!

I really think he mistakenly believes that StarDragon is associated with Free-DC. After getting so upset about not being able to upload, and receiving a nastygram from the DF folks, he said "screw you" and left the FreeDC team.
I don't know if he realizes that
1.) DF and FreeDC are not the same thing
2.) By leaving the team, he hurts Free-DC, not DF
:( :( :( :(

I thought about that last night. So I emailed him to explain the relationship.
I hope that was the reason he left, and that he will come back soon.
FoBot is right though..he is FREE to do what he wants, but he is missed.
Some of the responses to Fozzies post in the "Official DF Forum"
were shameful.
I agree with rsbriggs that Fozzie associates those people with us "Free-DC" and that is the reason he left the team.
It would have been better If more members of Free-DC had given him moral support
in that thread. :bonk:

PCZ, I would agree with you there. Now all we can do is damage control, and if this type of thing should happen in the future, not let our teamates hanging in the breeze.
It's always sad to see things like this happen.

I'm going to have to disagree a bit with you here. I've read every post in that thread twice and I don't think that Free-DC comes out smelling of roses.
A (now-former) Free-DC member posted a petulant and combative message. He was frustrated. We all know how that is. But the facts remain that the protein change was announced well ahead of time and it was suggested that all buffered work be uploaded before the switch because the server would be busy.
Amazingly enough, the server was busy when the time came. There were a lot of machines downloading the new client, a lot of others dumping buffered work at the last minute, and a few trying to upload new results. The finite resources of bandwidth and connections were consumed. This seems to happen every protein change, so it's not exactly a big surprise when it happens.
Fozzie was unlucky enough to get stuck in a traffic jam.
The rest of Fozzie's problems are not DF's responsibility. DF doesn't control how far away he lives from his machines, nor do they control the way time zones work. DF doesn't control UK telecoms policy, which makes using a modem as expensive as owning a private jet. Fozzie, not Howard, controls how Fozzie allocates his time. If his interests or obligations prevent him commuting all over England to upload DF results in the dead of night, that's actually a good thing - it shows his priorities are correct.
Elena's reponse was terse but not terribly out of line. All she did was state the rules, and Fozzie jumped all over her. Then the whole thing got very ugly and very stupid.
It would be in the interest of DF to work out the bandwidth/connections problem. I don't know if it's lack of funding, lack of interest, or lack of people to work on the problem, but they should probably give it a little higher priority. The DF project clearly doesn't have the resources to have huge banks of servers and fat pipes sitting around waiting for a 24-hour surge every four or six weeks, but there's almost always more than one way to solve a problem.
DF currently has just 6.7% of its registered users participating. This is down from 8.7% on the last protein. This is a 23% decline, and doesn't bode well for this project's future. Protein changes are a huge problem for this project, and they need to address quite a few issues before they get down to 0 users. But they won't do anything if we attack them, even if we think it's in the defense of one of our own.
So it's too bad Fozzie lost some work. It's happened to all of us for one reason or another. And it's too bad Fozzie chose to vent his frustration directly to the project management instead of to us. And it's too bad Fozzie took his points away. My guess is he'll be back. He wants to compete, and he can't do that on the Muppets team. It may take him a while to cool off, but I suspect he'll come back on his own.

I must admit I went into "Brat mode" good and proper.
Yes it's not DF's fault I have a shit connection and have to travel to work.
It's a bit annoying that protein change is at 17:00 my time so just when i leave work. So I can't change my puters over to the new protein until the next working day. Hence I have 24 hours of gens ready to upload.
By the time I get home that night to upload they are worth half.
Nothing I can do about it.
Boy was I pissed.
Had a weekend away with the kids and chilled.
Found my rattle which I had thrown a fair distance and my rotating tie and joy buzzer.
A little quiet over at Muppet Central so I am catching the next Big Bird back to Free DC.
I have to get used to life not being fair sometimes, and just deal with it. :)
Sorry guys for being a bit of an arse.

We've all been there, done that at one point or another. The thing to focus on now is that you are back on the team!
What team is that, you might ask?
FREE-DC!!
Only the best there is! :)
Welcome back Fozzie. You were missed.

all the DC clients/projects i have worked with have had a "feature" or two that required me to "adjust" in some way or another, if anybody ever finds the holy http://www.britannia.com/history/arthur/chalice.jpg grail of DC projects/clients , please don't keep it to yourself ;)
nice to hear from you fozzie :hiya:
