Using DF to test system stability

For a local competition, I mentioned that DF would be a great stability test for the cpu and ram. Some of the local OCers consider "stable" the ability to boot into windows - and yet can't play a 30 minute round of BattleField 1942 without crashing. (After data corruption on 2 of my via chipset folding systems, I opted for the More Systems approach. :)

Are there any recommendations on HD stress tests and video stress tests that won't ruin DF production?

You could try passmark's BurnInTest. This program allow you to choose which piece of hardware is included in a test.
Just select 2D, 3D en hdd test and let it run.
